Annabelle Gurwitch of ‘Wa$ted!’ Meets Bloggers in NY

May 25, 2010 | by gweiswasser

Yesterday, Planet Green and Annabelle Gurwitch of Wa$ted! hosted a group of bloggers at Discovery Communications’ New York office to talk about the show and the impact it has had on its participants. On Wa$ted!, Gurwitch visits families and small businesses to help them identify ways that they can save money by living a greener lifestyle. Joining Gurwitch on the panel were two recent participants — Jill Space, whose New Jersey household was featured on an episode airing this Wednesday night, and Erin Bailey, co-owner of the Sweet Melissa Patisserie in Brooklyn.

Gurwitch and the bloggers in attendance talked with Space and Bailey about what it was like being on the show, and whether they have been able to maintain the recommendations made by Gurwitch during the filming of their respective episodes (such as using organic flour and compostable packaging or sorting recyclables and using earth-friendly detergent). Gurwitch said that she likes to offer “out of the box” but manageable suggestions to the people on her show.  “I am not interested in ideology”, she said. “I am interested in action.”

Afterwards, Gurwitch chatted with attendees, including Susan Hunt Stevens of Practically Green and Brian Merchant of TreeHugger.com (pictured at right).

Never seen Wa$ted!? Check out a mash-up of the stories featured in Season 3 below, including the ones featuring the Space family and Sweet Melissa Patisserie.

‘The Hollywood Reporter’ Names O’Neill and Reverand to ‘Reality Power List’

May 24, 2010 | by gweiswasser

O'Neill

The Hollywood Reporter just published its annual Reality Power List, which ranks the top people in reality TV.

Stephen Reverand

Reverand

As usual, the Discovery family was well-represented on the list, with TLC President & GM Eileen O’Neill and Discovery Channel SVP of Development & Production Stephen Reverand making the cut. Read more about O’Neill and Reverand and congratulations from the Discovery family! (Among the tidbits I picked up from this article: O’Neill combats stress by doing puzzles at her Delaware beach cottage and Reverand spends his Sundays falconing at the Chesapeake Bay.)

If you’re wondering what it takes to be recognized on the Reality Power List, here are the criteria used by The Hollywood Reporter:

    • The indelible mark each person makes on his or her shows as producer, overseeing executive or talent.
    • Greenlight power. Can the person get a show on the air? Also, the number of shows, their Nielsen ratings and overall impact on pop culture.
    • The person’s professional reputation for quality and innovation within the business.
    • How the individual has sparked a “watercooler” factor for his or her shows and their ability to create dramatic, comedic and can’t-miss TV moments.
