Get Your Geek on at a Science Channel Meetup

August 31, 2010 | by aharris

Sci Fi ScienceScientific fact: we have lots of passionate fans of our networks. Whether it’s Deadliest Catch fans who travel to Seattle for the annual Catch Con or Beekman Boys watchers who build Lego versions of the farm featured on Planet Green, we love them all.

In order to bring together another group of dedicated viewers, Science Channel is hosting a Washington, D.C. meetup for the premiere of Sci Fi Science on Wednesday, September 1. Not in the D.C. area, check out sciencechannel.com/scifisocial for info on how you can connect with other fans (by organizing your own meetup, joining a chat next week with Dr. Michio Kaku and more).

Sci Fi Science premieres on Wednesday, September 1 at 10pm ET/PT on Science Channel (preview below).

Primetime Emmy Awards: An Honor Just to Be Mentioned

August 30, 2010 | by gweiswasser

While no one from the Discovery Communications family was up for a statuette at the Emmy Awards last night (we had our night to shine last week), we were nevertheless pleased to see both Discovery Channel and TLC well-represented at the annual celebration of excellence in television.

Jimmy Fallon Led Several Members of the Glee Cast and Other Stars in the Opening Number

Kate Gosselin of TLC’s Kate Plus 8 was part of the brilliant opening number, which spoofed Glee and ended with a pitch-perfect imitation by Jimmy Fallon of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run. Kate was one of the backup singers and danced along with the Glee cast, Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, Joel McHale, Jorge Garcia and more.

Earlier in the night, Jimmy Fallon name dropped Paul Sr. from TLC’s American Chopper on the red carpet when Ryan Seacrest asked him who engraves the names on the Emmys (watch the clip below).

Two of Discovery Channel’s top series were also included in the telecast, with MythBusters hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman featured at the opening of the reality TV montage (prompting many MythBusters fans on Twitter to share their support for seeing them present at the Emmys next year). And, on a sad note, Captain Phil Harris from Deadliest Catch was remembered in the annual tribute to TV personalities (in front of and behind the camera) who passed away during the last year.

Animal Planet Debuts Powerful New Miniseries, ‘Blood Dolphins’

August 27, 2010 | by aharris

As Animal Planet’s Whale Wars ends its second season tonight with a two-hour finale at 9pm ET/PT, the network will premiere a three-part series, Blood Dolphins, spotlighting renowned dolphin activist Ric O’Barry’s campaign to expose the plight of dolphins worldwide. With his son, filmmaker Lincoln O’Barry, Ric picks up where the Academy Award-winning film The Cove left off, exposing the world to the shocking slaughter of thousands of dolphins in Japan.

In the premiere episode of Blood Dolphins, Ric and Lincoln return to the site of The Cove (Taiji, Japan), which is also the nerve center of the senseless annual slaughter of approximately 20,000 dolphins. Along with a small crew, they revisit this little inlet that has been widely criticized for its customary six-month dolphin hunting seasons.

Check out a sneak peek at the miniseries below and tune in Friday, August 27 at 11pm ET/PT (and its regular 9pm ET/PT timeslot the following Friday).

Les Stroud’s Back in Discovery Channel’s ‘Beyond Survival’

August 26, 2010 | by aharris

After braving the wilderness on his own in Survivorman, award-winning filmmaker, author and outdoor adventurer/instructor Les Stroud (@reallesstroud on Twitter) is returning to Discovery Channel with Beyond Survival this Friday, August 27, at 10pm ET/PT. However, this time Les is journeying to some of the most remote places on the planet to meet indigenous tribes and take part in their rituals and ceremonies, discovering how their cultures have endured.

Friday’s premiere takes viewers to Sri Lanka to introduce the 2,500-year-old practice of “devil dances,” an all-night healing ceremony involving masked dancers imitating disease-causing demons. Devil dances have even become a staple at many five-star hotels in the area!

Check out a preview of the series below and take a tribal trip from your couch Fridays at 10pm ET/PT.

Petfinder.com Foundation Gives Gulf Region Dogs ‘Helping Paw’

Two Lucky Dogs Getting Love in New Jersey

Some heartwarming news from Petfinder.com this week…

Through Petfinder.com‘s efforts working with member shelters in the Gulf region and in New Jersey, a hundred dogs who were otherwise facing euthanasia in the Gulf region due to displacement related to the oil spill were transported earlier this month to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey. St. Hubert’s is providing housing and any needed medical care for the dogs, and making them available for adoption. (You can check out the dogs available in their Madison and Branchburg locations).

The transport and care of these animals was financed in part by a grant from the Petfinder.com Foundation, which awarded $10,000 to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. The Foundation is giving another $140,000 to Gulf-area shelters and rescue groups affected by the oil spill, many of which are taking in more animals as their owners can no longer afford to keep them.
