Discovery Channel’s ‘Life’ & ‘Deadliest Catch’ Earn Emmys

This past Saturday, the best of the best were honored at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles — with Discovery Channel and Animal Planet up for a collective 16 nominations.

Discovery Channel’s  Life won for Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming, with cinematographer Doug Allan accepting on behalf of the team. Deadliest Catch‘s Bob Bronow was also honored with an Emmy for Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming. It’s great to see the men and women behind the scenes honored for their talent.

Science Channel Gets Kids Excited About Science with ‘Head Rush’

Science Channel has just the thing to lure kids away from their after-school texting and iPods — a new commercial-free programming block focused on science.

Head Rush, which debuts on Monday, August 23 at 4pm ET/PT (and airs Monday through Friday, as well as Saturdays from 7-9am ET/PT), is geared toward middle school students, sharing the wonders of science and showing how it is a vital part of their everyday lives. Hosted by MythBusters‘ Kari Byron, Head Rush is also part of Discovery Communications’ commitment to The White House’s STEM initiative, which emphasizes science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

Sully Takes the Reins on Discovery Channel’s ‘Pitchmen’

Sully Weighs the Pros and Cons of Inventions on Discovery Channel's Pitchmen

Discovery Channel’s Pitchmen returns tonight at 9pm ET/PT for its second season — with one very notable difference.  The series follows Anthony “Sully” Sullivan as he attempts to pick up the pieces and continue making inventors’ dreams come true after the sudden death last summer of his longtime friend and pitch partner, Billy Mays.  This season, Sully scours the country seeking out inventions that provide simple solutions to common problems.  Each episode features good, bad and hilarious ideas, and will showcase the inventions from first pitch to final commercial to see if the risk pays off for the dare-to-dream inventors.

Tonight, a former marine attempts to revolutionize the flashlight by creating a flashlight arm band, while Sully dons a fire suit and sets himself ablaze to test out a fire suppressant product. (If that weren’t heroic enough, he also “visited” 33 cities in less than four hours during a satellite interview tour earlier this week. Busy man!)

We all know that these days, geek is definitely chic (a mantra we repeat often here at Discovery!). So we were especially proud to see that our own Debbie Myers, General Manager of Science Channel, was chosen by Geek Girl on the Street as this week’s “Geek of the Week.”

Kate Kotler, Founding Editor of Geek Girl on the Street, met Myers earlier this summer and had the chance to interview her for the weekly Geek of the Week feature on her blog (previous honorees include MythBusters and Head Rush’s Kari Byron). Kotler said that the interview was “a huge deal – having a woman in charge of a channel dedicated to championing the science, technology, engineering and math goes a way to dispelling the oft-repeated rumor that ‘girls don’t like science/technology/engineering/math.’  Dontcha think?”

Daneen Looks Over Baby Kiana

With the premiere of TLC’s DC Cupcakes, we asked you to share your favorite memory of you and your sister together in our Sister Blog Contest. Katherine and Sophie from Georgetown Cupcake have a special sisterly bond, and it was exciting to see that many of you do as well. We received quite a few sweet, silly and inspiring stories in response…and today we are excited to announce the winner!

Congratulations to Kiana, a first-time blogger who submitted a touching story about her sister Daneen. In her story, Kiana explains Daneen’s struggles with Rett syndrome, a disorder of the nervous system that leads to developmental reversals. The bond that Kiana and big sister Daneen share is inspiring and brought tears to both Katherine and Sophie’s eyes (as it surely will for many of you).

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their memories and stories about their sisters with us and the world, and congrats again to Kiana for winning a $500 VISA gift card — good for a great for a present for (or maybe even a visit to) Daneen!

DC Cupcakes will be back for a second season, but you can catch up on the first season with a special marathon on September 11 at 1pm ET/PT on TLC!
