Discovery Channel Rewards Fans on GetGlue with New Discounts

November 30, 2010 | by aharris

MythBusters Discounts on GetGlueLast month, Discovery Channel unveiled custom stickers for fans who check into Discovery Channel, MythBusters and Storm Chasers on GetGlue, the popular entertainment-focused social network. And now, just in time for the holidays, Discovery Channel is announcing additional rewards through fan discounts at DiscoveryStore.com.

To earn a sticker and discount, simply watch and check into MythBusters, Storm Chasers or another Discovery Channel show five times on GetGlue. Once you have, you’ll earn your show- or network-sticker and see a new “special” on the associated page online or on your mobile app. For example, if you are a MythBusters fan, you will earn 10% off all MythBusters merchandise at DiscoveryStore.com. The same goes for Storm Chasers, and Discovery Channel fans (checking into any five shows on the network) can save across the entire online store. If you’ve already achieved “fan” status, you can go ahead and start using your discount today.

Here’s to all of you!

This Thanksgiving, We’re Gonna Hurl…Pumpkins

November 24, 2010 | by aharris

Punkin Chunkin 2010Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, food and, in the case of Discovery Channel and Science Channel, high-flying pumpkins and splat-filled feats of engineering and science.

Following the 2010 World Punkin Chunkin Championship, Punkin Chunkin explores every angle of the intense competition from growing special, aerodynamic pumpkins and determining the perfect pumpkin’s mass to the mechanics of the air cannon and the physics of catapults. Is this a small, cult gathering? Hardly. With 110 teams and 30,000 spectators, Punkin Chunkin rivals the other sports you might tune into over the long holiday weekend. Even MythBusters’ Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman are getting in on the action as hosts of Punkin Chunkin, which premieres Thanksgiving night at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel and Science Channel.

And, if you want to see what it takes to make it to the top, Science Channel’s The Road to Punkin Chunkin (Wednesday, November 24 at 10pm ET/PT) will introduce you to the teams and personalities behind the air cannons and trebuchets.  Also, you can try your hand at chunkin with the Lord of the Gourd game at ScienceChannel.com.

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving, full of pumpkin pie and pumpkin splats (on the TV only, of course)!

Give Back with Animal Planet’s ‘You Watch. We Give.’ This Weekend

November 23, 2010 | by gweiswasser

If you want to do good this weekend, but you’re feeling lazy after a big Thanksgiving dinner, then we have just the opportunity for you. You can actually make the world a better place just by sitting on your couch and watching TV.

Tia Torres of Villalobos Rescue Center

Animal Planet has announced that it will donate up to $50,000 to the Villalobos Rescue Center, a nonprofit organization featured in Pit Bulls and Parolees, based on the number of viewers who tune into the November 27 episode at 10pm ET/PT. This initiative, called “You Watch. We Give.”, is a first for any Discovery network and part of Animal Planet’s R.O.A.R., a national campaign that leads the way in taking action and being a voice for animals.  The Villalobos Rescue Center, run by Tia Torres,  is a rescue, rehabilitation and placement facility for abused and abandoned pit bulls.

In the special Thanksgiving weekend episode, Devastation, Tia embarks on a road trip to Louisiana and comes face to face with the effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans, years after the storm. While there, Tia throws caution to the wind while attempting a dramatic pit bull rescue during a fierce lighting storm.

Learn more about Villalobos and all of the R.O.A.R partners, and don’t miss Pit Bulls and Parolees on Saturday!
