Investigation Discovery’s ‘Disappeared’ Leads to Location of Missing Woman

January 31, 2011 | by gweiswasser

ID LogoInvestigation Discovery‘s Disappeared follows the unpredictable twists of missing person cases, tracking investigations aimed at answering how and why people have vanished.  Each episode searches for clues hidden beneath seemingly everyday behavior that may indicate whether or not the person left voluntarily or if foul play was involved. Disappeared also asks viewers to share fresh leads in hopes of deciphering what truly happened to the missing and hopefully providing answers and closure to their loved ones left behind.

The series had a breakthrough last week when missing Michelle McMullen was arrested after police in Oakland, California received a tip from a viewer who had seen McMullen’s Disappeared episode.  McMullen disappeared on September 29, 2008 from Harrisburg, PA while police were investigating the theft of more than $2,000 from her former place of employment.  Investigators believed she went on the run, while her parents feared that she was abducted, as she had left behind a six year-old.  McMullen is currently waiting to be extradited to Harrisburg where she will face charges of theft and forgery.

Disappeared airs on Investigation Discovery on Mondays at 9pm ET/PT.  Watch a clip of the original McMullen Disappeared episode below and see who else is still missing, as you could hold the lead that could close another unsolved case.

‘Kidnap & Rescue’ Looks at Abduction Through Eyes of Rescuers

January 28, 2011 | by aharris

Unfortunately, kidnappings and abductions have become more frequent here in the U.S. and abroad, with only a few of the many tragic stories becoming headline news. In Kidnap & Rescue, Discovery Channel gives us a look at the world of kidnapping through the eyes of the rescuers who go where no one else can and risk violent reprisals to reclaim innocent victims.

Criminal gangs are estimated to make up to $500 million a year in ransom payments from kidnapping, with more than 70% of kidnappings resolved by ransom payments. For some, though, a rescue is a last resort. Whether it’s a high-profile executive being held for ransom, a child sold overseas or a DEA agent taken by a vengeful cartel, the hope of every victim often lies in the hands of the few with the training and dedication to bring them home.

Kidnap & Rescue, premiering Saturday at 10pm ET/PT,  takes you into a shadowy world of astonishing cruelty and terrifying extremes. Regardless of the mission, the motivation is the same: to get everyone back alive. Watch a preview below, meet the people that risk it all to save innocent victims and learn tips to keep you and your family safe.

Discovery Education Helps Science Education Go Digital in Florida

January 27, 2011 | by aharris

Discovery Education Science TechbookOn Tuesday night, President Obama gave his State of the Union Address to Congress and millions of Americans. One of the subjects he touched upon was education, which is at the core of Discovery Communications — through our educational programming and online content and our Discovery Education division.

In the address, President Obama challenged the country to adopt digital textbooks to help students learn skills to better compete in the global economy. In another indication of the growing movement toward digital textbooks, Florida just approved the Discovery Education Science Elementary Techbook for Florida for classroom use (joining Indiana, Louisiana and Oregon in adopting Discovery Education’s digital science service).

Times certainly have changed since I was an elementary school student, but it’s empowering to see education and technology evolve together.

Buddy Picks the ‘Next Great Baker’ on TLC Tonight

January 24, 2011 | by gweiswasser

This season of Next Great Baker on TLC has been a very entertaining mix of extremes – amazing baking prowess displayed by Buddy and some of the contestants during their weekly challenges, contrasted with some unmitigated disasters (last week’s car cake with missing wheels comes to mind). It all comes to an end tonight with the Next Great Baker finale at 9 PM ET/PT. Who will win – steady Dana, ambitious Megan, or dark horse Corina? My kids and I will definitely be tuning in to find out – we’ve loved this show all season.
