Animal Planet Travels to ‘Madagascar’ on Sunday Night

April 29, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Many of us here at Discovery Communications woke up at an ungodly hour this morning to turn on TLC‘s coverage of the Royal Wedding. From the romantic dress to the pomp of Westminster Abbey, we were transported to another country and, it felt at times, another era.

This Sunday, viewers won’t need to wake up early, but they can travel to an even more exotic location — Madagascar — on Animal Planet‘s upcoming special Madagascar at 8pm ET/PT. For 65 million years Madagascar was lost to the world in splendid isolation — undiscovered and untouched by man. Left to its own devices, it became a hot bed of evolution, creating the greatest concentration of unique creatures anywhere on the planet. More than 80 percent of Madagascar’s animals and plants are found nowhere else on Earth. Recognized as one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots, this is an Alice-in-Wonderland island of weird animals, strange plants and extraordinary landscapes. New species are still being discovered every year.

With conservationists currently placing Madagascar as a top priority, now is the perfect time to paint the definitive portrait of this truly remarkable island country. Tune in on Sunday night (May 1) to experience this remarkable land from your own living room, and click here to learn more about conservation efforts in Madagascar.

Discovery Celebrates Take Your Kids to Work Day 2011

April 28, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Discovery Communications takes its commitment to satisfying curiosity seriously. That goal — sharing the wonder of our world — doesn’t end with its viewers, but it extends to its employees as well. This was the first year I was able to participate in Discovery’s famed Kids Day, and it lived up to its expectations. Instead of just another day of first grade, my 7 year-old twins came to work with me today, where they experienced the following:

  • A presentation from Discovery Channel‘s Shark Advisor, Andy DeHart, who also happens to be the Director of Fishes & Aquatic Vertebrates at the National Aquarium  Institute
  • A presentation from Bill Simpkins, Director of Education at the National Aquarium
  • Several arts projects
  • Outdoor exercise in the afternoon, including an obstacle course
  • Two yummy meals

Not bad for a single day! I was impressed with Discovery’s commitment to making it a positive, enriching, and fun experience for the hundreds of kids who participated. From my perspective, it was a day that I won’t forget anytime soon, nor, I suspect, will my daughters.

Keep Up with Spring Weather with Storm Chasers’ Storm Tracker

April 27, 2011 | by aharris

Storm Chasers Storm TrackerGrowing up in Oklahoma, I developed a deep-rooted love of dramatic weather. While I’m certainly never hoping for violent storms that impact life and property, it seems that Mother Nature has not gotten that memo this spring — as tornadoes have erupted across the country throughout April.

Luckily, we have meteorologists and storm chasers that do their best to predict the unpredictable and keep all of us safe. If you want to keep tabs on severe weather, Discovery Channel‘s Storm Chasers teams are currently traveling the country in their ongoing efforts to learn more about weather and provide early warnings to local officials and reporters when severe storms surface. You can keep tabs on their teams and others across the U.S. with the Storm Chasers Storm Tracker page on Discovery.com.

Also, if you are in a tornado-prone area, check out 15 tornado safety tips from HowStuffWorks.com and, most importantly, stay safe.

Discovery Channel Explores Japan’s ‘Nuclear Nightmare’

April 26, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Last Sunday, Discovery Channel took a look at the recent earthquake in Japan, through new footage and first person accounts. MegaQuake: Hour That Shook Japan explored the mega-physics inside this latest Ring of Fire cataclysm that rocked the Earth on its axis. This Thursday, April 28, at 10pm ET/PT, Discovery Channel will look at another angle of last month’s disaster: the nuclear crisis at Fukushima Daiichi.

Nuclear Nightmare: Japan in Crisis presents a comprehensive timeline of the massive earthquake and tsunami that triggered a horrific domino effect at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant. The documentary, hosted by Investigation Discovery’s Paula Zahn, will focus on the personal stories of people who lived through the terrifying earthquake and the tsunami, including an American consultant who was at the power plant when the terrible chain of events started.  Viewers will also hear from two nuclear experts who were at Three Mile Island and know what it’s like inside a nuclear power plant during a crisis, as well as a wide range of experts on every aspect of the crisis, from radiation’s effect on human health to how backup systems failed at the plant.

Can workers bring the plant under control? What lessons can we learn and how the disaster will affect America’s nuclear energy program? Find out on Thursday at 10pm ET/PT.
