Shoni Schimmel

This Saturday at 9pm ET/PT, TLC is proud to air the documentary film Off the Rez, which follows a Umatilla Indian family’s journey as they leave the reservation – and the only life they have ever known – to pursue an athletic scholarship. Off the Rez stars Shoni Schimmel, one of the best high school basketball players in the country, and her mother Ceci (who is also her coach) as they work together to redeem generations of struggle for their family and their people, while dealing with the repercussions of leaving the reservation.

Off The Rez was executive produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, debuted last month at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here is what Slam basketball blog had to say about the movie, including an interview about how it was made. And check out a sneak peek of the documentary below:

Wonderful Documentary! Enjoyed & Cried through the show! So proud of Ceci and Shoni as well as the whole family!

Discovery, we need more documentaries like this. It’s been a long time since I watched anything on TLC!

Thank you again for a great show!

Ceci is native american, dad is white– doesn’t that make Shoni bi-racial not native american? Kinda like Obama, dad is black, mom is white, makes him bi-racial. Oh, wait a minute, he doesn’t acknowledge his maternal race. You can’t pick your race, it is what it is, call it what it is. Shoni is a great athlete, her mom is wonderful, her dad is wonderful. The racial blame game just doesn’t hold water anymore, stop identifying yourself racially, we’re all americans. You are not held back, nor should you be rewarded for your race. Shoni, your success is all up to you. Good Luck.
