Discovery Fit & Health’s ‘Psych Week’ Debuts Sunday

Discovery Fit & Health LogoDiscovery Fit & Health‘s programming often sheds light on people living through extraordinary circumstances — from families struggling to help their ill children to individuals battling unusual addictions. From May 22 to 27, the network returns with Psych Week, delving into the human psyche and the very real diseases that affect people’s lives everyday.

Psych Week begins Sunday at 7pm ET with a primetime marathon of Hoarding: Buried Alive. You can find the full schedule for the week online, along with a useful mental health guide covering a wide range of disorders. One particularly unforgettable special is Born Schizophrenic (Tuesday, May 24 at 9pm ET), which tells the story of January Schofield who was diagnosed as schizophrenic at the age of five. Her family’s story (watch a preview below) is shocking and, above all, heartbreaking.

Sweet Donations for the Hope for Henry Foundation

TLC is proud to partner with Georgetown Cupcake to help raise awareness for the Hope for Henry Foundation. From now until the end of the year, TLC and Georgetown Cupcake will donate $30 from each exclusive dozen cupcakes sold topped with superhero fondant decorations and the Hope for Henry Foundation logo. Why the superhero decoration? Hope for Henry’s mission is to better the lives of children nationwide suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Hope for Henry has given more than 900 seriously ill children brand-new, high-end portable electronics that they can use while in the hospital, and has hosted superhero celebrations, summer carnivals, Harry Potter book parties and Halloween parties for more than 4,000 children.

Discovery News & HowStuffWorks’ Cristen Conger Takes on ‘Sexting’ on MSNBC

One of the trends among teens that has gotten a lot of attention of late is “sexting,” or sending sexually suggestive images or videos of themselves to someone else via text message. As with many new uses of technology, sexting has spread to new (and older) audiences. Cristen Conger, of Discovery News and HowStuffWorks’ Stuff Mom Never Told You blog and podcast, recently asked, Are Adults Having Good Sexts? in an article for DiscoveryNews.com.

Cristen’s report caught the attention of MSNBC and Martin Bashir had her on his show today to talk about the trend as it relates to a broader audience. Check out the interview below:

Discovery Channel Stars Light Up Late Night

Discovery Channel was well-represented in late night TV last night.

Deadliest Catch‘s Sig Hansen appeared on Conan, where he talked about fans, medical care at sea, and Twitter. (You can follow his tweets here.) Take a look:

Meanwhile, Storm Chasers‘ Reed Timmer was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, discussing how he got interested in weather and why this has been such a dramatic year for tornadoes.

If you want to learn more about the 2011 tornado season, Discovery Channel will air a special called Behind the Killer Tornadoes of 2011 this Sunday, May 22, at 9pm ET/PT. It will present never-before-seen footage from the Storm Chasers, recount their harrowing stories and put into both scientific and human context the overwhelming tragedy these storms caused.

When Is A Voicemail More Than Just A Voicemail? On Tonight’s ‘American Chopper’

An important step is taken in the Senior vs. Junior stalemate on Discovery Channel‘s American Chopper tonight: despite the legal posturing going on between father and son in addition to their competing motorcycle businesses, Junior reaches out to his father with a voicemail after Senior’s dog dies. As Senior notes, Junior could have sent an email or a text, but instead decided to leave a voice message for his father, whom he knows is grieving deeply over the loss of his beloved Gus. Is this a step toward reconciliation?

TLC Goes ‘Off the Rez’ on Saturday Night

This Saturday at 9pm ET/PT, TLC is proud to air the documentary film Off the Rez, which follows a Umatilla Indian family’s journey as they leave the reservation – and the only life they have ever known – to pursue an athletic scholarship. Off the Rez stars Shoni Schimmel, one of the best high school basketball players in the country, and her mother Ceci (who is also her coach) as they work together to redeem generations of struggle for their family and their people, while dealing with the repercussions of leaving the reservation.

Off The Rez was executive produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, debuted last month at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here is what Slam basketball blog had to say about the movie, including an interview about how it was made. And check out a sneak peek of the documentary below:
