‘Til Death Do Us…Enema? ‘Man, Woman, Wild’ Returns to Discovery Friday!

August 31, 2011 | by aharris

In a relationship, you may go through highs and lows, but love and commitment carry you through. But what happens when that relationship is tested by another woman — Mother Nature? That’s exactly what we find out in Discovery Channel‘s Man, Woman, Wild, which returns on Friday at 9pm ET/PT.

Mykel Hawke (also host of One Man Army) is a former Special Forces survival expert and his wife, Ruth England, is a TV journalist. Together, they take on some of the most forbidding and remote locations around the world in Man, Woman, Wild. Dropped into each spot, they must survive as a team for four days and nights, with only a knife and the clothes on their backs. In Friday’s premiere, Mykel faces dehydration at sea and must ask for Ruth’s help — in the form of an improvised enema (two words I never thought I’d pair together in a blog post). I could explain, but the clip below is all that’s needed. If you’ve ever feel like things are rough with your significant other, this show is a reminder of what you could be dealing with.

New Episodes of ‘Family Game Night’ Return to The Hub This Friday

August 30, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Dear The Hub:

Todd Newton, Host of 'Family Game Night'

Thank you so much for your show, Family Game Night. My kids are addicted. They love watching other families compete in games they know and love — Connect Four, Boppit, Twister and others — and are absolutely enraptured whenever the show comes on the air.

You’ve made road trips easier for us, and you’ve even improved my kids’ game-playing skills when we play them at home. I was happy to see that you have new games this season; my kids are going to be even more excited about the new shows. I also love that this is a show that I can watch — and enjoy —with them, which is rare for kids’ programming.

Here’s to a great new season, and you know we’ll be tuning in on Friday at 7pm!

Sincerely,
Gayle

Hit the Road with New Eps of ‘American Chopper’ and a Sneak Peek of ‘Carfellas’

August 29, 2011 | by aharris

American Chopper is back on Discovery Channel on Mondays (at 9pm ET/PT) with new episodes, as the crews from Orange County Choppers and Paul Jr. Designs continue to deliver amazing bikes and Mikey’s art career starts to flourish.

And, following Chopper tonight at 10pm ET/PT, you can also catch a sneak peek at a new Discovery series: Carfellas. The series introduces us to Mikey D. (yes, we have two Mikeys on Mondays) who has made some mistakes in the past but is now trying to make an honest living with his used car dealership, Broadway Motors. Mikey is joined by Tommie and Mario as they look to acquire and sell all types of cars to Long Islanders.

In the Carfellas preview below, Tommie visits a classic car collector who even owns the Chrysler (as big as a whale) from the B-52′s Love Shack video. While the Chrysler doesn’t catch Tommie’s eye, something else does…

Discovery Debuts ‘Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero’

August 24, 2011 | by aharris

NYC Skyline at NightI can remember exactly where I was and how I felt on September 11, 2001, as I am sure all of you can. While we remember those we lost in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania (including our Discovery colleague Elizabeth Wainio), Discovery Channel & Science are also looking forward with Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero.

Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg, the six-part series premieres commercial-free on Thursday, August 25, at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery and celebrates the men and women who are bonded and driven by single purpose — re-imagining and rebuilding the former site of the World Trade Center’s twin towers.

We invite you to check out a preview of the special, to find out more about the project through the Behind the Fence blog and to, most importantly, take some time to learn about two charities we are supporting: the Tribute WTC Visitor Center and the FealGood Foundation (featured in videos below).

In May, we announced here that Mike Rowe of Discovery Channel‘s Dirty Jobs has partnered with Discovery Communications on a new multimedia initiative, Discover Your Skills, that provides unemployed and underemployed Americans with access to resources for obtaining marketable job skills while also raising the awareness of employment opportunities. It includes www.DiscoverYourSkills.com, an online resource providing links and information to help educate, prepare and advance entry to the workforce.

Today, Discovery announced the expansion of Discover Your Skills, including a partnership with Montgomery College focused on better preparing students with the necessary skills to take advantage of available job opportunities, and the airing of eight public service announcements (PSAs) across its US networks and digital platforms highlighting career opportunities in the skilled trades and the importance of training workers to fill critical jobs in manufacturing, health care, energy, technology, construction and other industries.

Here are three of the PSAs, featuring Mike Rowe, Buddy Valastro of TLC‘s Cake Boss, and Jeannette Torres from Discovery Familia:

Also today, Discovery announced that its Discovery Education division will introduce a community college service for the 2012-2013 academic year. The new service will provide curriculum-based content to support post-secondary institutions and prepare students with skills necessary to compete in today’s job market.

The new initiatives and three of the PSAs were unveiled today at Montgomery College in Silver Spring, Md., by Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav; Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley; Montgomery College President DeRionne P. Pollard, Ph.D.; US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan; Maryland Labor Secretary Alexander M. Sanchez; Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett; and Penny Pritzker, Advisory Board Chair, Skills for America’s Future, The Aspen Institute.
