Jeremiah Duggar Shows Off His Artistic Skills

Last month, 125 Discovery employees were joined by familiar faces from several of Discovery’s networks for a special project: helping Habitat for Humanity build homes for families left homeless after the devastating tornadoes that ravaged Alabama on April 27.

The team had several sets of extra hands thanks to TLC‘s Duggar family, and tomorrow night (November 1) you can catch a special 19 Kids & Counting episode at 9pm ET/PT documenting the trip to Birmingham (and featuring several of my co-workers). See what the littlest kids helped with in the clip below, and help contribute to the reconstruction efforts by purchasing a Storm Chasers or 19 Kids & Counting t-shirt with proceeds benefiting Habitat for Humanity Birmingham.

Just in time for Halloween… Animal Planet takes a new look at the mystery of Bigfoot in Finding Bigfoot: Birth of a Legend this Sunday at 9pm ET/PT. On this two-hour special, the Bigfoot Field Research Organization team trudges deep into California’s Redwood forest and uses new technology to investigate one of the most infamous and disputed pieces of Bigfoot evidence ever – the Patterson-Gimlin footage that allegedly captured Bigfoot in motion. Here’s a sneak peek:

Do you believe in Bigfoot? Check out these pieces of evidence, and rate whether you think they are credible or not.

At One Discovery Place the Rush is on: Gold Rush. Discovery Channel‘s hit series is back for a second season, as we follow the miners from Oregon in the search of solid gold for their families.

Discovery debuted a special episode, The Off-Season, online last week so fans could catch up on Todd Hoffman and the crew as they head north for another season, and today Todd and Dave Turin took to NYC in anticipation of tomorrow’s premiere. With many folks working hard to make ends meet, Discovery Channel is also inviting people in Chicago, DC and LA to fill up with $20 worth of free gas on Friday morning. New Discovery HomepageIf you haven’t visited Discovery Channel’s website recently, it’s worth a look.

This week, our Digital Media team launched a redesigned homepage with a new, clean, contemporary design — featuring your favorite shows at the top and blog and news posts updated in real-time. Also, the site has an increased focus on new topics that are relevant to Discovery Channel: adventure, gear and gadgets, and cars and bikes. Visitors to the site will also notice that Discovery News’ fascinating look at the world is more visible and better integrated, and the new Discovernator keeps you on top of “crazy amazing” facts.

Take a look (it’s easy to get distracted by all the great content) and let us know what you think!

TLC to Reach More Than 100 Million Homes Internationally

October 25, 2011 | by gweiswasser

TLC LogoWith two upcoming international launches, TLC will reach more than 100 million households outside the U.S. as of November 2, 2011 — making it the leading global lifestyle and entertainment network. Those two launches, Finland on November 1 and Portugal on November 2, join 46 other countries across Africa that TLC now reaches through its distribution partner, Multichoice, as of October 14. The biggest pay-TV operator in sub-Saharan Africa, Multichoice will air TLC on Africa’s digital DStv service, which has 3.5 million subscribers across the continent. TLC is also available in South Africa on Top TV.

Also, as noted earlier on the Discovery Blog, beginning November 1 in Latin America, Discovery Travel & Living will undergo a brand enhancement to become Travel & Living Channel (TLC) available to viewers in 38 countries across the region. Additionally, TLC recently launched on October 6 in Denmark to 1 million households across the country. In its first day on air, TLC succeeded in lifting primetime viewership in Denmark by 94%, due to strong showings by popular programs including What Not to Wear and On The Case with Paula Zahn.

Congratulations to the Discovery Networks International team for achieving such an impressive, worldly milestone!

Employees ‘Creating Change’: Meet Sheila Hayes

October 24, 2011 | by aharris

Last week, you met Maia Kotlus-Gates, one of our many employees sharing her talents and expertise as a part of our second annual Creating Change, our probono marathon supporting area nonprofits with creative services. Today, we’d like to introduce you to Discovery Creative’s Sheila Hayes, who will be helping build a marketing campaign for Achieving the Dream next month.

Sheila Hayes

Meet Sheila Hayes, one of our employees involved in 'Creating Change'.

Tell us about your current position at Discovery Communications.

I’m an Associate Creative Director in Discovery Creative, working primarily on concepting big ideas for TLC and Investigation Discovery marketing campaigns – with a little Discovery Fit & Health on the side. But in my time at Discovery, I’ve been lucky enough to work on all of the networks, on everything from sharks and crocs to toddlers, tattoos and polygamists.

What is your proudest creative moment?

Pre-Discovery, it was launching a public service campaign in the hours immediately following the terrorist attacks on 9/11 — from a hotel room in New York — asking the OOH industry to immediately donate space to post messages of healing on bus shelters, taxi tops and billboards, and a little invitation I did for then-Vice President and Mrs. Gore’s annual Halloween party (they were Beauty & The Beast, by the way). Recently, at Discovery, the risk we took with the creative for TLC’s NY Ink, featuring Ami in nothing but ink.

What do you do to get the creative juices flowing?

By creative juices, you mean caffeine, right?

What inspires you to create change in the world?

It’s not what, so much as it is who inspires me: my father, a WWII veteran who raised seven children on a social worker’s salary; Bill Clinton; Steve Jobs; Bill Gates; and Jane Goodall. How’s that for a range?

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me….

On my yoga mat or on the beach, or – ideally – some combination of both.

What are you most looking forward to during the Creating Change probono marathon event?

Beyond the challenge of the deadline and the adrenaline of the pitch, there’s the immediate gratification of making a difference – in a single day. Hearing our client say this brochure/ad/spot never would have happened otherwise. We get to spend the day “being the change we seek in the world.” How cool is that?
