Discovery Channel and Discovery Fit & Health Premiere ‘Weed Wars’ Thursday at 10pm ET/PT

November 30, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Oakland CA’s Harborside Health Center isn’t your typical Northen California startup: it’s the nation’s largest medicinal cannabis dispensary, serving over 94,000 patients. Weed Wars, which premieres Thursday at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel and Discovery Fit & Health, features Harborside’s staff, growers, “patient farmers” and clients, many of whom say that their lives have been forever changed by the plant. Harborside founder and executive director Steve DeAngelo has made twin missions of providing the best possible product to the patients who make up his client base, and educating the rest of the country about the regulation and taxation of those goods. Weed Wars is an up close and personal look at the reality of running a controversial medicinal cannabis business.

DeAngelo and Harborside are very careful to obey all California state laws about marijuana, but could be found to be in violation of federal law. Here’s what DeAngelo has to say about that:

Tune in to Weed Wars on Thursday night for more of this fascinating look at the world of medicinal cannabis.

‘Watch and Give’ with Animal Planet on Saturday

November 21, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Want to help pit bulls without leaving your couch?

As part of Animal Planet‘s ongoing commitment to make a positive impact in the animal world, the network is asking viewers to tune in to Pit Bulls and Parolees this Saturday night, November 26, to help drive donations to Villalobos Rescue Center, a nonprofit organization featured in the series. The campaign called “You Watch. We Give.” is part of the network’s nonprofit initiative Reach Out. Act. Respond. (R.O.A.R). Based on the number of viewers who watch the new episode of Pit Bulls and Parolees on Saturday at 10 pm ET/PT, funds will be donated to give thanks to Tia Torres for her tireless dedication to pit bulls.

Last year, the “You Watch. We Give.” campaign yielded a donation of $50,000 and more than one million viewers to become the series’ most-watched episode ever.  The 2010 donations paid for half of Villalobos’ yearly vet bill for the 150 dogs Tia houses. The funds allowed her to keep dogs — like Egypt, who needed hip surgery, and Sheriff, who needed intestinal surgery - healthy and ready for adoption.

Here’s more about the show and this R.O.A.R. initiative:
