Put Science’s ‘An Idiot Abroad’ on Your Bucket List

January 20, 2012 | by aharris

An Idiot Abroad 2Two words: Karl Pilkington. Yes, that’s right, Ricky Gervais’ favorite round-headed friend is returning to Science on Saturday, January 21, at 10pm ET/PT in An Idiot Abroad 2: The Bucket List.

After following Karl to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in the first season (and spending Saturday night’s Tweeting along with fellow fans for Science), I know there’s no better cure for the winter blahs than a dose An Idiot Abroad and Karl’s unique perspective on the world. This time around, Gervais and Stephen Merchant present our friend Karl with a bucket list of experiences to have before one dies, giving him the chance to pick; of course, this doesn’t mean that Ricky and Stephen don’t have a few unexpected twist and turns for our fearful traveler.

In the first episode, Karl seeks relaxation on a desert island in the South Pacific and, as you’ll see in the clip below, he first ends up making some new friends.

And, as I alluded to earlier, Karl will have you laughing and wanting to share his thoughts on the world with others. So Science has developed a handy An Idiot Abroad Social To-Do List, including a new set of stickers you can earn when you check in on GetGlue and an addicting weekly SideShow experience on Miso. Enjoy traveling the world with Karl!

Saturdays Are Red Hot with Investigation Discovery’s ‘Scorned: Love Kills’

January 20, 2012 | by aharris

Are you an ID Addict? If so, Investigation Discovery is serving up a hot new series that examines real-life crimes of passion and the dark side of love. The first episode of Scorned: Love Kills, premiering on Saturday at 10pm ET/PT, introduces us to Joan and David Shannon of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

With four kids and a picket fence, you’d never guess that the Shannons were swingers, participating in organized sex parties. But what happens when one of them breaks their cardinal rule of not falling in love? While I won’t spoil it, their relationship takes a deadly turn and involves an unexpected accomplice. You can watch a preview of tomorrow’s episode below, see what treacherous tales are coming up this season, and enter to win one of ID’s weekly prize packs in their Red Hot Sweepstakes.

January 17, 2012 | by aharris

Discovery Channel‘s taken viewers to the northern seas with Deadliest Catch and to the swamps of Florida with Swamp Brothers, and now audiences can travel south the bayou of Louisiana to see what it takes to strike it rich in “white gold” during the three-month white shrimp season.

Ragin’ Cajuns, premiering tonight at 10pm ET/PT, is set in Venice, Louisiana — a 2,000-person town that was thriving prior to Hurricane Katrina and the oil spill of 2010. Shrimping success is tied not just to families but to the survival of the town. You’ll meet a new set of captains on Tuesday nights and join them as work hard (and play hard) on land and at sea.

Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership’s ‘Inside Story’ Makes North American Premiere

January 16, 2012 | by aharris

Last week, Silver Spring rolled out the red carpet for the North American premiere of a new film that seeks to revolutionize HIV/AIDS education for millions in sub-Saharan Africa, Inside Story: The Science of HIV/AIDS. Hosted at the beautiful AFI Silver, the event brought together several members of the pan-African cast and crew, leaders in the eradication of HIV/AIDS — including Ambassador Eric Goosby, United States Global AIDS Coordinator, African dignitaries and partners who helped bring the project to fruition.

The message of the film is simple: knowledge is power. It’s a message shared by the film’s protagonist, Kalu, as we follow his soccer ambitions and struggles along the way. The idea for the film, produced by Curious Pictures South Africa, came about when Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership was assessing community and educational needs among its Learning Centers. Six years later and thanks to the support of generous partners, including the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Chevron, Discovery Communications, Access Bank, the South African Department of Trade and Industry, SEACOM and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the team is firming up plans for an expansive distribution — from African cinemas, free-to-air broadcasts and DVDs paired with teaching guides.

You can watch the extended trailer for Inside Story online and keep up with the film here and by liking the Inside Story Facebook page. We’ve also included a look at the North American premiere, which followed a warm reception in Johannesburg lat month, below.
