Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership Celebrates Successes & Milestones in Africa

February 29, 2012 | by aharris

Over the past few months, I’ve kept you updated on the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership‘s Inside Story, a film and initiative that stands to make a great impact on the HIV/AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. However, this project was born out DCGEP’s ongoing Learning Center initiative across Africa and around the world…and that work continues today.

Just last month, Tammy Noboa, DCGEP’s Chief Strategy Officer, was in Kenya to visit two Coca-Cola and Discovery Communications sponsored schools. In Machakos, as in so many other communities, the desire for educational resources is high. In fact, in this community an hour outside of Nairobi, parents raised money to add electricity to a classroom in a school without any so that they could be selected for DCGEP’s Learning Center initiative. Since then, videos on electricity, agriculture and economics have spurred school and community projects – from students building a windmill that powers a battery in their classroom tied to a solar system model to parents diversifying their crop planting and cutting out the “middle man” by selling direct to consumers.

Last Friday, DCGEP and Chevron, another corporate partner, celebrated the graduation of five Learning Centers in Limpopo, South Africa. When schools are selected for Learning Centers, they receive the necessary equipment, video library and teacher training needed to re-invent and re-invigorate the classroom. Years after the three-year intervention period, over 85% of these schools continue to be self-sustaining – using the teacher methodology and materials provided by DCGEP. The graduation event, held a Kopanong Primary school in the Sekhukhune District, was attended by Vincent Raseroka, Chairman of Chevron South Africa; the Honorable Namane Dickson Masemola, MEC of Education; Alfred Matlala, Mayor of Makhuduthamaga; and Mampuru Mampuru III, Chief of Sekhukhune.

The Minister in charge of education thanked Chevron and DCGEP, noting “What we saw today was an example of good classroom practice. We can only run a successful education program if we build a good foundation.” Since 2002, Chevron and DCGEP have established 65 Learning Centers in Angola, Brazil, Nigeria, South Africa and Venezuela – a good foundation, indeed.

I had a chance to visit a Learning Center in South Africa, and I invite you to visit these two through the photos below. Also, make sure “like” Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership on Facebook for feel-good updates from around the world.

Meet the Interns: Discovery Channel’s Anastacia Darby

February 27, 2012 | by aharris

Last week, we profiled Chris Najmi, the first of several spring semester Discovery interns that we will be introducing you to via Discovery Blog. In today’s Meet the Interns installment, you’ll meet Anastacia Darby, a sophomore at American University in Washington, D.C. who is studying International Communications and Business Marketing. For more information about internships and careers and Discovery Communications, make sure to visit careers.discovery.com!

What department are you interning with?
I am interning in Discovery Channel‘s Program Development and Production department at the Silver Spring headquarters.

Why did you apply to intern with Discovery?
Aside from a general love for the network, I took a particular interest in Discovery after working as a Production Assistant on Seasons 1 and 2 of Sons of Guns, which filmed in my hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. From this, I knew that I wanted to try to continue working with the network when I returned to school here in D.C. Since my previous experience was in production, working in the Program Development and Production department has given me the unique opportunity to understand and participate in the process that leads to that point.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you were selected to intern with Discovery?
Everyone was extremely excited and impressed. It is definitely one of those internships that you can’t wait to tell people about!

Tell us about one of the projects you are currently working on.
I am responsible for a few ongoing projects, such as producing a bi-weekly reports spanning competitor, top production company, and other network news and ratings.

What has been your favorite aspect of your internship with Discovery so far?
By far, my favorite aspect of my internship has been sitting in on meetings with the Development team.

What is one goal you hope to accomplish during your time with the Discovery Channel team?
I hope to gain a better understanding of the development process, from idea conception to production hand off, and the factors that drive the decision-making processes along the way.

If you could guest star on any Discovery network show, what would it be and why?
I would love to be a surprised contestant on Cash Cab someday…though, honestly, I am camera shy and probably wouldn’t sign the release.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your internship experience?
Everyone in my department has been so welcoming! I instantly felt like a part of the team which makes for a truly great work environment!

Get Ready for the ‘Gold Rush’ Season Finale with Twitter-Infused Episodes

February 24, 2012 | by aharris

Gold Rush MinersSocial media has become an intrinsic part of our TV watching experience. In fact, according to a recent report from Nielsen and NM Incite, 44% of TV viewers are visiting a social network site  on their tablet or smartphone while watching. Our in-house Social Media team spends countless hours connecting with our fans and listening to their reactions to our shows (which we love), and tonight Discovery Channel will mesh the two in special social media editions of Gold Rush.

Following today’s all-day marathon, at 7 and 8pm ET/PT, you can tune in to see fan Tweets edited into two of this season’s episodes (think Pop Up Video meets Gold Rush). Then, stay tuned at 9pm ET/PT for the season 2 finale (preview below) and find out if Todd, Jack and the crew get the 100 ounces of gold they so desperately desire.

Investigation Discovery Debuts ‘The Injustice Files: At the End of a Rope’ Tonight

February 21, 2012 | by aharris
Keith Beauchamp of 'The Injustic Files: At the End of a Rope'

The Injustice Files' Keith Beauchamp

Tonight, investigative filmmaker Keith Beauchamp returns to Investigation Discovery to examine shocking tales of suspected modern-day lynchings in the United States. Often associated with an earlier era of racial prejudice and all-to-common hate crimes, The Injustice Files: At the End of a Rope looks at four mysterious hanging deaths, all ruled suicides, but that many believe were deliberate murders.

Beauchamp believes the newest installment of The Injustice Files will be “a huge awakening for many who will have to confront the unsettling thought that lynchings still may occur in this country, proving how far we have to go to obtain true justice for all.” Joined by a criminologist, psychologist and forensic pathologist, Beauchamp re-examines these closed cases in the search for justice and closure for families and communities.

Watch an interview from tonight’s premiere below and tune in for the two-hour special event at 8pm ET/PT on Investigation Discovery.
