Meet the Interns: Investigation Discovery’s Chris Najmi

February 16, 2012 | by aharris

Every semester, Discovery Communications brings in a group of talented and hard working interns from a variety of backgrounds to learn about their field of study through hands on experiences at several of Discovery’s offices. Our weekly Meet the Interns feature, brought to you by Digital Communications & Social Media intern Mark DiGiammarino, will introduce you to some of the 100 spring 2012 interns from across the country. Today’s post features Chris Najmi, a senior at American University in Washington, D.C. who is majoring in International Studies with a concentration in International Communication and China.

What department are you interning with?
I’m interning with the Investigation Discovery Production team in Silver Spring, MD.

Why did you apply to intern with Discovery?
I’ve always loved Discovery’s non-fiction content and wanted to work somewhere I could not only learn about production bottom-up, but also have the opportunity to impact the creative process.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you were selected to intern with Investigation Discovery?
They screamed! My friends and family have always known I’ve wanted to work with Discovery, but none of us ever thought it would be this early in my career.

Tell us about one of the projects you are currently working on.
I’m currently working on an acquisition, turning a British investigative program into an ID program titled Killer Trials: Judgement Day. It’s incredible to work with a show through this process, watching how a previously British program is produced for an American audience. The series premiered less than two weeks ago and is on Fridays at 10pm ET/PT.

What has been your favorite aspect of your internship with Discovery so far?
The involvement. Each day is completely different and you never know whom you’re going to be meeting with or whom you might bump into while getting coffee. I was shocked when during my first day I participated in a meeting with the executive producers and the president of Investigation Discovery.

What is one goal you hope to accomplish during your time with the Investigation Discovery team?
I hope to work with different programs throughout every stage of the process, to gain an understanding of how a program goes from an idea to televisions at home.

If you could guest star on any Discovery network show, what would it be and why?
Man vs. Wild
. I’d love to team up with Bear Grylls in a fight for my life.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your internship experience?
Everyone has been extremely welcoming! I’m excited to be with Discovery and can’t wait to see who or what I might be working with each day.
