On this day in 1985, Discovery Channel launched to 156,000 subscribers in the United States with Iceberg Alley, a documentary examining the risks of oil drilling off the eastern coast of Canada. Today the network reaches 409 million subscribers globally and Discovery Communications‘ portfolio of networks reach 1.7 billion subscribers.
Thanks to John Hendricks‘ vision, dedication and innovative spirit, Discovery has flourished as the leading nonfiction media company and a beacon for those curious about the world around them. I find it appropriate that we are celebrating Discovery’s 27th birthday on Father’s Day, given Hendricks’ role as the father of this company and inspiration for new nonfiction networks and programming celebrating our planet and its people.
Happy Birthday, Discovery…and Happy Father’s Day to ours, John Hendricks, and all the fathers out there!
