Animal Planet’s R.O.A.R. Matching Campaign Returns, Supporting Seven Nonprofits

August 31, 2012 | by aharris

Animal Planet's R.O.A.R.After a successful campaign last year, Animal Planet’s R.O.A.R. animal advocacy initiative will launch an eight-week campaign to raise funds for seven deserving R.O.A.R. (which stands for Reach Out. Act. Respond.) charities. Through on-air, online and social media calls to action, Animal Planet will introduce fans to these nonprofit organizations and encourage individuals to make a donation, as the network matches their donations up to $120,000!

Click on the links below to get to know these animal welfare non-profits and, starting Saturday, September 1, visit GlobalGiving.org to make a donation.

And, to sweeten the pot, $20,000 has been designated for the top monthly fundraiser ($5,000), the most unique monthly number of donations ($5,000), a “spreading the word” bonus that accounts for the most number of “shares” on Facebook ($5,000), and a judgment award for the overall loudest ROAR (up to $5,000). The matching funds are generated by Animal Planet’s consumer products program, which include pet products and lifestyle products from apparel to toys and home décor. Animal Planet licensees contribute a portion of their sales to R.O.A.R. with the intention of giving something back to the animals the network celebrates daily.

Animal Planet’s Marjorie Kaplan Tells ‘Redbook’ Readers What Their Bosses Really Hate

August 29, 2012 | by kdelmonico

Redbook - September 2012

When she’s not busy keeping science cool and killing us with animal cuteness, Marjorie Kaplan, President of Animal Planet and Science is giving Redbook readers the inside scoop on what their bosses are really thinking.

As the head of two cable networks, Kaplan clearly has learned quite a bit about office behavior and what works (as well as what doesn’t) when trying to impress your boss. In a piece in this month’s Redbook, she answers reader questions about dating co-workers and crying in front of a supervisor. Click on the cover above to read the story!

Discovery Education and will.i.am Team Up for STEAM Initiative

August 28, 2012 | by kdelmonico

Today, Discovery Education, in conjunction with will.i.am’s i.am.angel foundation, announced a groundbreaking science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics initiative. Called i.am.STEAM, the program is designed to inspire and cultivate the next generation of innovators and STEAM leaders.

The initiative was announced today at an event for students from the i.am College Track Center in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, held at NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California. will.i.am also released his new single, “Reach for the Stars” at the event — by transmitting the song from the Red Planet’s surface to Earth via Curiosity. The song was inspired by will.i.am’s lifelong passion for science, which is clearly fitting for the first song ever to be transmitted from Mars. Members of the team that successfully landed the rover on Mars earlier this month also spoke to students about the Curiosity mission and explained the technology behind the interplanetary transmission of will.i.am’s new song.

“Today is about inspiring young people to lead a life without limits placed on their potential and to pursue collaboration between humanity and technology through STEAM education. I know my purpose is to inspire young people, because they will keep inspiring me back,” will.i.am stated.

Paul Teutul Jr. and Paul Teutul Sr. at 'American Choper Live' in December 2011

Paul Teutul Jr. and Paul Teutul Sr. at ‘American Choper Live’ in December 2011

It’s been a rocky few years for Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Jr. — the talented American Chopperbike builders turned family rivals. On Monday, September 3 (at 9pm ET/PT), father and son will begin a new build, revisiting the first bike they teamed up on while working on their relationship (watch a preview below).

And, tomorrow night, August 28 (check your local CBS listings for times), the two will join fan David Letterman on The Late Show together to talk about the next chapter in their lives. Both are open to reconciliation but understandably guarded about what the future holds (read more in Friday’s New York Post interview). There are certainly a lot of fans rooting for Senior and Junior, and I know I’m one of them.

Meet the Most Pup-ular Dog in America

August 24, 2012 | by kdelmonico

Who doesn’t love Pound Puppies? He would probably kill me for saying this, but when my fiance’s family moved out of his childhood home, the main item he was interested in rescuing from the trash heap was his beloved childhood stuffed Pound Puppy. The Pound Puppy safely survived the move and now lives with us in Washington — very cosmopolitan.

You can spend your Saturday with the Pound Puppies, as The Dog Days of Summer continue on The Hub. Starting at 9am ET, a Pound Puppies marathon will have a special guest star — the winner of The Dog Days of Summer’s Pup-ularity Contest! The winner (who will received a trip to LA for four and a $5,000 donation in their name to the Petfinder Foundation) will be revealed during the marathon, and let’s just say he/she is a very special pup.
