Amish in the City: TLC’s ‘Breaking Amish’ Explores Life Beyond the Country

TLC's 'Breaking Amish'In an alternate life, I perhaps could be a baker, a fashion stylist or a pageant girl, but I’m fairly certain I would have a series of challenges living in an Amish or Mennonite community (my addiction to technology, fashion and the such are clearly at odds with a more simple lifestyle). However, continuing to provide us with a glimpse into worlds and lives that are often unfamiliar to us, TLC will premiere its newest series, Breaking Amish, this Sunday at 10pm ET/PT and give viewers an intimate look at the lives of young men and women who leave their Amish an Mennonite roots for the bustling metropolis of New York City.

From first plane rides to wearing jeans, Break Amish is much more than Rumspringa, as Jeremiah, Kate, Abe, Rebecca and and Sabrina seriously consider committing to careers and lives beyond their communities. Whether they return home or stay, their “rebellious” choices will impact their relationships with their families. Get to know these young men and women through their video profiles on TLC.com, and catch a preview before Sunday’s premiere below.

I love the show and wish only the best for these 5 young adults. I admire them for having the guts to leave the only life they know for a chance to learn a new way of life.(and allowing Discovery to document both the good and bad)

Why would Jeremiah leave his wife because they didn’t get along and tell Abe about wanting to be with Rebecca who is in the same boat as Jeremiah? And Kate should just move on with her career as a model and stop drinking. Does she have seizures or something from drinking too much? She’s not going to make it in the Modeling world if she doesn’t learn something about trusting her instincts, her own decisions, and not make a fool out of herself by being on her own. Rebecca- she’s another kind of problem. You knew that when you hooked up with Abe that you were already married and not divorced yet. Where’s you guys common sense about wanting to be like those who are confined to there religion like you guys are. It’s a shame that your own people treat you like an outsider if you go and try something once and want to come back into the fold of the elders.
