Discovery Returns to ‘Alaska: The Last Frontier’ with the Kilcher Family

October 2, 2012 | by aharris

Alaska: The Last FrontierIf you tune into Discovery Channel — from Deadliest Catch to Gold Rush — you’re often left thinking, “I could never do that.” Well, tonight’s premiere will have you, if you’re like me, thinking the same. Alaska: The Last Frontier follows the Kilcher Family who fled Switzerland during WWII and settled eventually in the woods of Southern Alaska.

Three generations of the Kilcher family still live there today on a homestead consisting of over 640 acres. Yule Kilcher and his wife Ruth taught their family (six girls and two boys) to be self-sufficient and live off the land.  Yule’s sons, Atz and Otto, continue this way of life  with their sons, Atz Lee, Atz’s son, and Eivin, Otto’s son, and their families. Get to know the Kilchers through the video below and tune in tonight at 9pm ET/PT to Discovery Channel and contemplate if you could make it in the Alaskan frontier.

And, if the name “Kilcher” or the title song sound familiar, there’s a reason. Grammy nominated singer and songwriter Jewel is Atz’s daughter and performs the theme with her dad, who also authored the song.

Discovery Braves the Elements on ‘Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice’ and ‘Yukon Men’

August 23, 2012 | by kdelmonico

While I am patiently waiting for summer in Silver Spring to make its way out the door (commuting in 95-degree heat will do that to you), some of the conditions on Discovery Channel on Friday night may have me rethinking that position. At 9pm ET/PT, on the new series Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice, three gold mining teams will risk their lives to go dredging for gold underneath four feet of ice coating the Bering Sea. Even if they do survive, the teams face the physical and emotional effects of the freezing cold water, including hypothermia, hypoxia, hypercapnia, vertigo, and frostbite.

At 10pm ET/PT, head deep into the Alaska wilderness on Yukon Men. In Tanana, Alaska, the 200-person community is facing one of the harshest winters on record and doing anything they can to stay warm — and stay alive. The men of the town have to face predators, gather food and brave the elements in order to keep their families safe. Check out a sneak peek of Yukon Men below:

TLC’s ‘Breaking Amish’ Meets Discovery Channel’s ‘Shark Week’

On August 2, Discovery’s networks highlighted upcoming programming for TV critics during a series of afternoon TCA panels — from TLC‘s Breaking Amish and OWN‘s Married to the Army: Alaska to Military Channel‘s The Brokaw Files and Discovery Channel‘s Curiosity: Plane Crash (wt).

Following the presentation, the critics and special guests were invited to the pool at the Beverly Hilton for a special 25th Anniversary Shark Week Party. As sharks invaded the pool and swam by on large screens, attendees enjoyed shark-inspired cocktails and cupcakes, while posing for pics with a special sand sculpture and the one-of-a-kind VW Beetle shark cage.

Check out pictures from Discovery Communications’ TCA panels and the Shark Week festivities below and on our Facebook page.

Third Season of ‘Flying Wild Alaska’ Takes Off Tonight on Discovery Channel

June 8, 2012 | by kdelmonico

Ariel TwetoJust as summer heats up, Discovery Channel is cooling things down by heading back to Alaska for the premiere of Flying Wild Alaska. The series follows Jim Tweto and his family as they run their airline, Era Alaska. The Twetos live in isolated Unalakleet, Alaska (with a population of 750 people) and have to battle the elements to get passengers and supplies to some of the most remote Alaskan locations.

In tonight’s episode, Jim and Ferno’s daughter Ariel, having recently received her pilot’s license, joins in on a desperate search to find a missing friend. Despite the tense situation on tonight’s season premiere, Ariel is her usual bubbly self in the clip below, from her recent appearance on Extra with Maria Menounos. For a daily dose of Ariel’s adventures (and larger-than-life personality), follow her at @ArielTweto on Twitter. Flying Wild Alaska premieres tonight on Discovery Channel at 10pm ET/PT.

Discovery Channel Takes to the Alaskan Skies in ‘Flying Wild Alaska’

January 14, 2011 | by gweiswasser

It’s all in the family on the new Discovery Channel series Flying Wild Alaska, premiering tonight at 9pm ET/PT.  The series follows the Twetos, the first family of the Alaskan skies, as they operate Era Alaska, an airline that transports everyday necessities to one of the most remote and extreme parts of America. With no freeway system for hundreds of miles, Era Alaska is the lifeline for the isolated rural inhabitants of the Bering Sea coastline. From champion snow dogs bound for the Iditarod to medicine for sick children, the goods that the pilots ship on any given day are crucial to daily life. (In one episode, they even have to deliver a toilet seat!)

Get to know the intrepid Tweto Family &mash; Jim, his wife Ferno, and daughters Ariel and Ayla — and read more about the show here. And check out a sneak peek below!
