Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta‘s Monte Durham helps local high school girls create a prom night to remember.

On Tuesday, Discovery Communications’ headquarters was transformed into the ultimate prom preparation station to help make local high school girls’ prom dreams come true.

For the second annual Say Yes to the Prom, Discovery Communications invited 40 local high school girls to One Discovery Place for a star-studded day of mentoring, prom dress shopping and makeovers. The girls, each paired with a Discovery employee who served as a personal assistant, explored more than 800 dresses donated by Discovery employees and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) members. In the end, each girl said “Yes!” to her dream prom dress, choosing one with the help of the day’s host, Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta‘s Monte Durham. The girls then finished their looks with head-to-toe makeovers and their choice of accessories.

Dressed to the nines, the girls completed the special day with a red carpet reveal, hosted by Monte. Take a look at a few of the girls’ prom looks below, and visit our visit our Facebook page page to see more! Trés chic!

Monte with Personal Shopper and Girl

Monte Durham joins a Discovery employee and prom-ready girl before the runway show in 2012.

After a successful Say Yes to the Prom event in 2012, Discovery Communications has announced that, in conjunction with Magruder High School and KidsPeace, we will help local students Say Yes to the Prom again. On March 26, we will welcome 40 high school girls from the local community for an unforgettable day of beauty, fashion and fun.

Monte Durham of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta will again host the special day, ensuring each of the girls are prom-ready. Each girl will be matched with a Discovery employee, serving as her coach, personal shopper and style assistant throughout the day.

One Discovery Place will be transformed into prom central — with hair and beauty stations, alteration areas, shopping tables and, of course, a red-carpet runway. Girls will have the opportunity to choose from over 700 dresses and accessories donated by Discovery employees and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) members. After a makeover and additional “personal touches” from Monte, the girls will take center stage on the catwalk as the day’s true stars.

You can join in on the prom fun with us on Tuesday, March 26 by following @DiscoveryCommon Twitter and #SYTTP  on Twitter and Instagram!

Going, Going…Gone! Robots, Punt Guns & Iron Maidens on Discovery Channel

April 25, 2012 | by kdelmonico

Auction Kings was one of the first shows I worked on when I first started in social media at Discovery Channel. Set at storied Georgia auction house, Gallery 63, Paul Brown and his crew get some pretty cool and pretty strange items coming in.  I always looked forward to finding out which wacky, nostalgic, one-of-a kind items the auctions would be featured that week. The subject line of my emails would read “Hand Cannon/Faberge Pencil” or “Jim Morrison Poem/Cabbage Patch Dolls.” I, of course, immediately knew I would love my new job.

Tonight’s premiere (10pm ET/PT) is no exception, with a star-spangled T-Bucket roadster, 80s robot and iron maiden (historical torture device, not the 80s rock band) all going on the auction block.

But before Auction Kings, catch up with the Wyatt family as American Guns at 9pm ET/PT. Owners of one of the premiere gun outlets in the country, Gunsmoke, the Wyatts make, buy, sell and trade some of the most specialized guns in the country. On tonight’s premiere, Gunsmoke is commissioned to create a historical, and somewhat enormous, punt gun (preview below).

Discovery Says Yes to the Prom

One of the great advantages of working at a company like Discovery is being able to tap into our best resource – our awesome employees and on-air talent – for events like Say Yes to the Prom.  Yesterday, in conjunction with The Horizon Foundation, Discovery Communications invited 34 local girls to the Discovery offices in Silver Spring to choose a prom dress from over 300 dresses donated by Discovery employees from 13 offices.

Monte Durham, of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, hosted the day, giving the girls styling and beauty tips. Conference rooms were transformed into hair and makeup stations, alteration areas,  jewelry and shoe shopping tables, and last but not least, a red-carpet catwalk. The girls were each walked through the stations with a Discovery employee volunteer as their personal shopper, helping them select their prom dress and accessories.

The day culminated with a red-carpet walk once the prom looks were complete, as the employees gathered to watch Monte give each girl her corsage.

We caught up with Monte yesterday and he gave us the inside scoop on the day:
