This week, some of the best and brightest students from across the country gathered at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota to showcase their scientific smarts and compete for the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” The competition was the culmination of a three-month collaboration with 3M scientists as they created their personal innovations as a part of a summer mentoring program — going from concept to prototype — with the goal of solving an everyday problem.

Earlier today, Discovery Education and 3M announced the results, as 14-year-old Deepika Kurup from Nashua, New Hampshire was named the winner of the 2012 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her innovative, cost effective and sustainable water-purification system. Her prototype, which harnesses solar energy to disinfect contaminated water, can help improve the lives of the 1.1 billion people around the world who lack access to clean drinking water. Kurup and nine other finalists shared their completed innovations with a panel of judges, including Danny Forster of Science‘s Build it Bigger.

The remaining finalists also received a variety of prizes from Discovery Education and 3M. The second, third and fourth place winners each received a $1,000 cash prize and a trip from Discovery Student Adventures to Costa Rica. Congratulations to:

  • Carolyn Jons , Eden Prairie High School in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, second place
  • Anin Sayana, Bellarmine College Preparatory in Cupertino, California, third place
  • Anishaa Sivakumar, Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvannia, fourth place
  • Aidan Dwyer, Northport High School in Northport, New York
  • Naren Gaurav, Meadow Park Summa Middle School in Beaverton, Oregon
  • Brandon Gong , Garden City Middle School in Garden City, New York
  • Chase Lewis, homeschooled in Chapel Hill, North Carolina
  • Gabriel Mesa, Canton Intermediate School in Canton, Connecticut
  • Patrick Shea, Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville, Illinois

Discovery Communications Founder & Chairman John Hendricks

John Hendricks, Our Founder and Inspiration for the Annual Innovation Awards

On June 17, 1985, Discovery Channel made its debut in the U.S., and almost 27 years later we’re very fortunate at Discovery Communications to have our Founder & Chairman, John Hendricks, as a core part of our company and a very real example of the power of innovative ideas. Today, employees in Silver Spring (and around the world, thanks to modern technology) gathered to celebrate Mr. Hendricks’ innovative spirit and how it lives on daily in our workforce through the John Hendricks Innovation Awards.

Now in their third year, the John Hendricks Innovation Awards are an annual internal celebration of the most innovative and creative initiatives and programs at Discovery Communications and seeing your colleagues recognized makes you proud to be a part of the Discovery family. This year we were lucky enough to be joined by the dapper Danny Forster and two special employee co-hosts, James Williams from our Digital Media team in Silver Spring and Tess Johnson from our Sydney, Australia office. Winners ranged from the cross-departmental team behind the Gold Rush online aftershow and related on-air specials (pictured below) to the IT team responsible for an iPad app for screening our programming on the go.

Discovery Education Commemorates 10th Anniversary of 9/11 with Screenings, Classroom Resources

September 6, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Discovery Education will engage educators and students beyond the walls of the classroom with learning experiences covering the events of 9/11 and exploring the innovations and challenges associated with rebuilding a sacred site. Honoring the victims, survivors and all those affected by 9/11, Discovery Education, in collaboration with the September 11th Families’ Association and the Tribute WTC Visitor Center, will provide free educator resources, host previews of Discovery Channel & Science‘s Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero with panel discussions, and update Discovery Education streaming service with 9/11-focused resources.

Celebrating the communities, the stories and the resiliency represented by Americans most impacted by the tragic events of that day, Discovery Education will host four events in cities closely affected by 9/11 featuring previews of Rising, a series showcasing the people rebuilding and restoring Ground Zero. Streamed live to students nationwide, each event will be followed by live panel discussions with members of the community who will share how they were personally affected by 9/11.

Special guests will moderate the panel discussions at two of the events: Paula Zahn, host of Investigation Discovery’s On the Case with Paula Zahn will attend the NYC iSchool on September 9 and Danny Forster, executive producer of Rising, will attend American History High School in Newark, N.J., on September 13.

In addition to the events, Discovery Education is providing educators free online resources related to 9/11 available at discoveryeducation.com/911. Discovery Education streaming subscribers will have the exclusive opportunity to view episodes of Rising along with K-12 curricular content, discussion guides and lesson plans.

Discovery Debuts ‘Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero’

NYC Skyline at NightI can remember exactly where I was and how I felt on September 11, 2001, as I am sure all of you can. While we remember those we lost in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania (including our Discovery colleague Elizabeth Wainio), Discovery Channel & Science are also looking forward with Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero.

Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg, the six-part series premieres commercial-free on Thursday, August 25, at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery and celebrates the men and women who are bonded and driven by single purpose — re-imagining and rebuilding the former site of the World Trade Center’s twin towers.

We invite you to check out a preview of the special, to find out more about the project through the Behind the Fence blog and to, most importantly, take some time to learn about two charities we are supporting: the Tribute WTC Visitor Center and the FealGood Foundation (featured in videos below).
