Tonight, Discovery Health kicks off Adventures in Parenting Week, five nights of programming that explore some of the remarkable challenges and joys parents experience when raising a family.

  • Starting the week out tonight at 9PM ET/PT, meet four families learning to cope with Tourette Syndrome, a mysterious and often misunderstood condition. In Tourette’s Uncovered, meet Jonah, a boy who cannot suppress his overwhelming need to get up and run away; Colin, a boy who experiences constant headaches as a result of his tics; Marques, who suffers from the rare strain of Tourette’s that causes patients to shout obscenities uncontrollably; and Jaylen, a remarkable boy who is crusading against bullying by talking about his experiences in school. Jaylen and his mom, Robin, will be on Twitter during the premiere of Tourette’s Uncovered at 9pm ET/PT (both coasts!) to tweet about life in their household, ways to be an advocate for your child, how to prevent bullying and more.
  • Discovery Education will host a webinar on Wednesday, September 15 at 1PM ET to discuss the small, simple changes parents can make to combat the obesity epidemic. Then on Thursday, September 16 at 9PM ET/PT, follow the stories of two obese children and their struggles to embrace healthier, happier lifestyles on Big Kids.  Before and during the premiere, check out DiscoveryHealth.com for a town hall discussion with childhood obesity experts about raising healthy children.
  • Enter the world of parenting child geniuses on Wednesday, September 15 at 9PM ET/PT with My Kid’s Smarter Than Me, featuring Pranav, a 7-year-old boy who has an IQ 16 points higher than Einstein’s and Autumn, an 8-year-old art prodigy whose works sell for thousands of dollars (view selected works from her art gallery in our slideshow).

It’s ‘Baby Week’ on Discovery Health

July 12, 2010 | by gweiswasser

Baby Week LogoGet ready for a big dose of cute.

Discovery Health just kicked off an all-new Baby Week, celebrating the real-life drama of babies born under extraordinary circumstances.

First, fall in love with the tiny heroes of Discovery Health’s newest series, NICU, premiering this Thursday, July 15, at 10pm ET/PT. This ten-episode docu-drama takes viewers behind the scenes at the top neonatal intensive care units in Baltimore, San Diego and Cleveland, showing the day-to-day care required to sustain the smallest and most fragile lives. NICU follows families experiencing the rollercoaster of emotions that come with having a premature baby.

Baby Week also includes six specials, including Strange Pregnancies – a look at three unusual pregnancies, including a woman with two uteri; Born on a Bad Day – true and remarkable tales of moms giving birth during natural disasters and other precarious situations; and The 10 Most Unbelievable Births – highlights of the most dramatic pregnancy and delivery stories ever told on Discovery Health, narrated by our very own Deliver Me docs. (See the full Baby Week schedule here.)

And if you still haven’t gotten your fill of babies, take our Discovery Celebrity Baby Quiz! Match the adorable baby photo with the grown-up Discovery celebrity. (Warning: It’s harder than it looks.) Or check out the Cutest Baby Face-Off, where you can vote for the cutest baby in a March Madness-type bracket competition.

Happy Baby Week!

Discovery Health’s ‘Psych Week’: Educating Viewers and Employees About Mental Health

May 4, 2010 | by aharris

Psych WeekOn Sunday, Discovery Health launched Psych Week,  an initiative dedicated to helping increase understanding and end the stigma often associated with mental illness. A few of the alarming statistics I have learned from the National Institute of Mental Health:

  • An estimated 26.2% of Americans 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.
  • Mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and Canada for ages 15-44.
  • Mental illness, including suicide, accounts for over 15% of the burden of disease in established economies (more than that caused by all cancers combined).

We took this opportunity not only to screen previews of some of the programming  for our employees at our HQ, but also to answer their questions about some of the mental health issues addressed in Psych Week — from anxiety to schizophrenia. Employees also had the opportunity to learn about easy practices that can reduce stress and put us on a path to balance and mental health, such as meditation and massage.

Whether you’re impacted by mental illness personally, professionally or through a family member or friend, I hope you’ll join us throughout Mental Health Month (and beyond) to spread awareness. I’ve included a few links below to some great resources:
