Science Airs 9/11 Tribute of ‘Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero’

September 9, 2011 | by gweiswasser

This weekend, as the nation’s collective thoughts turn to the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Science will air all six episodes of Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero commercial-free,
starting at 5pm ET on Sunday. Rising celebrates the men and women who are driven by single purpose – re-imagining and rebuilding the former site of the World Trade Center’s twin towers. The series assembles a cast of real people facing the challenge of meeting their construction deadlines and doing honor to the victims and their families.

The rebuild is one of the most daunting construction jobs America has ever undertaken. Building four skyscrapers, a transportation hub, a museum and a memorial featuring the largest man-made waterfall in history – all at the same time on the same site – presents an unprecedented set of engineering challenges. From the design to the materials to the raw emotions and heavy hearts, Rising chronicles the teamwork and innovation involved in this beast of planning, timing and coordination. The special event series also looks at the rebirth of Lower Manhattan through the eyes of the residents who survived the horrors of 9/11 to reclaim and rebuild their neighborhood.

Here is a clip from the series featuring Alice Greenwald, the Director of the National 9/11 Museum being built at the site:

Discovery Debuts ‘Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero’

NYC Skyline at NightI can remember exactly where I was and how I felt on September 11, 2001, as I am sure all of you can. While we remember those we lost in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania (including our Discovery colleague Elizabeth Wainio), Discovery Channel & Science are also looking forward with Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero.

Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg, the six-part series premieres commercial-free on Thursday, August 25, at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery and celebrates the men and women who are bonded and driven by single purpose — re-imagining and rebuilding the former site of the World Trade Center’s twin towers.

We invite you to check out a preview of the special, to find out more about the project through the Behind the Fence blog and to, most importantly, take some time to learn about two charities we are supporting: the Tribute WTC Visitor Center and the FealGood Foundation (featured in videos below).
