Injustice Files: Hood of Suspicion Details Cases of Racial Profiling

February 13, 2013 | by kdelmonico

Last February, the nation was gripped by the case of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed, hooded-sweatshirt clad teenager who was killed by a self-appointed neighborhood watchmen in his Florida housing development. The details of the interaction remain hazy, but the call for justice was clear: the public wanted to know what happened, with speculation of racial motivations for this seemingly senseless killing.

Tonight, on Investigation Discovery’s  Injustice Files: Hood of Suspicion, award-winning filmmaker Keith Beauchamp will delve into the case of Trayvon Martin, as well as other cases that Beauchamp investigated as cases of racial profiling.

Beauchamp will also cover the case of Robbie Tolan, whose story I got to hear first hand at our Winter TCA tour in January. I won’t ruin the story for you but his is one that is not to be missed and you can see a sneak peek below. Investigation Discovery’s Hood of Suspicion premieres tonight at 8pm ET/PT.

On Tuesday, Investigation Discovery debuted documentary film, ID Films: March to Justice, reflecting on our nation’s ongoing pursuit of racial equality. The event, held at The Newseum in Washington, D.C., also featured a panel discussion following the film’s premiere, with Kerry Kennedy, president of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and daughter of former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, John Seigenthaler, First Amendment Center founder and former administrative assistant to Robert F. Kennedy and Carolyn McKinstry, witness to the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, AL in 1963.

Award-winning filmmaker Keith Beauchamp will host another ID event next week, this time in New York on Tuesday, February 12 at the Paley Center. The event will feature highlights of Beauchamp’s upcoming The Injustice Files: Hood of Suspicion, an in-depth look at racial-profiling practices still occurring today, brought to national attention in 2008 with the shooting of Robbie Tolan in Texas and, more recently, by the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida. Beauchamp will also be joined by Henry Schleiff, President & General Manager of Investigation Discovery, Kerry Kennedy, John Seigenthaler, Carolyn McKinstry, and Robbie Tolan for a panel discussion. Redrum: Sometimes The End is Just The Beginning

January 15, 2013 | by kdelmonico

As one of Investigation Discovery’s biggest addicts, I am convinced that, had I not pursued a career in communications, I would have been the world’s greatest detective – which is why I can’t wait for the premiere of Redrum on ID tonight at 10pm ET/PT.

A murder investigation always starts at the end of a crime, when the body is found. Redrum will take armchair detectives like myself back through the twists and turns of murder investigations to the very beginning, where viewers find out what actually kicked off the chain of events that resulted in such a crime.

If you think you’re up to the challenge, put your sleuthing skills to the test by piecing together this Redrum mystery – from finish to start.

After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, we heard many stories about heroic acts in the face of such horror: firefighters and police officers who selflessly helped others, putting their own safety in jeopardy; communities pulling together to provide support; and volunteers helping their neighbors search for their loved ones.

Tania Head was one of those heroes. A survivor of the Twin Tower attacks, Tania told a brave and courageous story about escaping from the 78th floor of the south tower that day — the only survivor of her Merrill Lynch team. Her message of hope and inspiration propelled her to become a leader among a new community of survivors, eventually becoming the President of the World Trade Center Survivors Network.

It wasn’t until six years after that tragic day that the truth about Tania’s story was revealed. As The New York Times fact checked a story about the heroic tale of Tania Head, they discovered something extremely alarming: Tania’s story wasn’t true.

Today, Investigation Discovery takes us inside this shocking story with The Woman Who Wasn’t There, directed by Angelo Guglielmo Jr., who was introduced to Tania through volunteer work at Ground Zero. Guglielmo, who calls the story a “psychological odyssey,” interviews friends and supporters of Tania who were shocked to learn that her story was fabricated. Once the truth of Tania’s story began to come out, her friends had one looming question: who is Tania Head?

The Woman Who Wasn’t There premieres on Investigation Discovery tonight at 8pm ET/PT. You can chat live with director Angelo Guglielmo Jr. tonight at 8pm ET and check out @DiscoveryID today for a Twitter contest to win a copy of the book The Woman Who Wasn’t There.

‘Wicked Attraction’ Returns to Investigation Discovery for Another Season of Deadly Duos

June 30, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Wicked Attraction, a series that explores what happens in the mind of the “average” person when they fall under the spell of a sadistic predator, returns tonight on Investigation Discovery at 9pm ET/PT.  On the show, forensic psychologists and criminal profilers uncover horrifying clues and reveal the true stories of people driven to commit murder together. Wicked Attraction investigates some of the most terrifying crimes in recent history and steps inside the criminal mind to explore the psychological motivations behind deadly duos.

On tonight’s episode: after two decades of abuse, Deborah Brown flees her husband Steven’s violent temper to live with her brother Don and his friend Chris. Her new found safety is soon shattered when a woman claims that her car broke down and lures Don and Chris to the road, where a vengeful Steven waits to kill them. Deborah hears a knock on the door and comes face to face with her estranged husband and his accomplice. They kidnap Deborah to a motel and brutalize her, forcing a SWAT team to intervene before it’s too late.

Here’s a reenactment of Steven’s final thoughts before setting off to commit murder (WARNING: This clip contains disturbing material.)
