Before I get flack for the headline, I must confirm that I’m an Okie (born and raised), so I still reserve the right to use an occasional “howdy” or “y’all” periodically…as in when I’ve just landed in Austin for SXSW Interactive!
Saturday is Discovery Communications’ big day – with a panel, Animal Planet’s Cats Live Here! party with friends from the CatVidFest & our own Jackson Galaxy and The Captains’ Concert at the iconic Stubb’s. While there’s much to do before then (like test an exclusive, cringeworthy preview Deadliest Catch fans will get of the upcoming season during tomorrow’s Twitter for Tough Guys panel), I can’t help but look forward to everything else that comes with SXSW: insightful panels and keynotes, meaningful opportunities to catch up with business partners, great people watching, and food and music to die for.

‘Deadliest Catch’ Celebrates Season Premiere with Its 100th Episode
April 10, 2012 | by kdelmonicoAfter 100 episodes chronicling the emotional and physical journeys of the men who risk their lives for one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, Deadliest Catch returns for a new season on Discovery Channel tonight.
With their fishing quota slashed by almost half and some of the harshest conditions they have ever faced, the crews worry about their strategies on the sea and how they’ll make ends meet back on land. The bonds of family and friendship are tested this season as newcomers and old faces find themselves in new roles, as Jake Harris joins the crew of the Northwestern, with Josh working as a Time Bandit deckhand.
A new season of Deadliest Catch premieres tonight at 9pm ET/PT on Discovery. Check in on GetGlue to earn the exclusive Deadliest Catch premiere sticker.
Stars Come Out for Discovery Communications’ Upfront
April 6, 2012 | by aharrisYesterday, Discovery Communications returned to Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City to host its annual Upfront for an audience of advertisers and press. While I shared news yesterday here about new and returning series coming to our networks, we wanted to give you a glimpse at the action — on stage and backstage — through the photos below.
I’ve been fortunate to attend several Upfront presentations and what always sticks with me is the feeling of family — from the team that works so hard behind the scenes to put on a great show to the talent across our nets that reunite or meet for the first time (where else can you find James Woods and Buddy Valastro both whipping out their iPhones to get a picture together?). I’m certainly proud to be a part of the Discovery family.

Help Discovery, Discovery News & HowStuffWorks Get to SXSW Interactive 2012
August 15, 2011 | by aharris
Today, SXSW launched their PanelPicker voting for SXSW Interactive 2012. For those new to SXSW, the festival brings together the best of film, interactive and music in Austin, TX. The 19th annual SXSW Interactive Festival kicks off on March 9, 2012 and features the best of online, wireless, gaming and social media…and may include some of the Discovery family.
Discovery Communications has proposed four panels covering social TV (featuring Deadliest Catch‘s Capt. Keith Colburn and Storm Chasers‘ Reed Timmer), online news (with the Discovery News team), podcasting (thanks to HowStuffWorks’ Stuff You Should Know team) and on converting women’s interest to general interest online (with HowStuffWorks’ Stuff Mom Never Told You).
Additionally, our friends at VolunteerMatch have put forth a panel featuring Discovery and discussing our CSR efforts. Click on the links below to read about the panels and, most importantly, cast your vote:
- Transforming TV: Real-World Talent, Fan Engagement
- You’re a Digital Celebrity, Now What?
- No Office, No Problem: Running a Virtual News Team
- Everyone’s Welcome: Bridging Gender Divides Online
- Rockin’ It Pro Bono Style
SXSW is a community-driven event and public votes make up 30% of the decision process (complemented by recommendations by staff and the Advisory Board). Thanks for taking a look at our panels and voting…we hope to see many of you in Austin in March 2012!
