Meet the Interns: Digital Distribution’s TJ Cooney

March 22, 2012 | by aharris

In the fourth installment of our Meet the Interns series, you will get to know TJ Cooney. TJ is a senior at The Catholic University of America and is currently spending the spring semester with Discovery’s Digital Distribution department at our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Why did you apply to intern with Discovery?
I applied to intern at Discovery Communications because I have loved their networks’ shows for as long as can remember. Since entering school, I have seen how Discovery has made it part of their mission to educate the world, and that is something I really want to be a part of.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you were selected to intern with Discovery?
My family was thrilled. They all knew that I have wanted to work here for as long as I can remember and were very supportive. They also knew that I interned and worked very hard at other places in order to get the opportunity to intern here, and I am exactly where I want to be right now.

Tell us about one of the projects you are currently working on.
The largest project I am working on is an industry landscape study, where I am basically creating a guide detailing how our digital distribution partners (such as Netflix, Apple and Amazon) are displaying our content, which can also be a tool to teach others about the services.

What has been your favorite aspect of your internship with Discovery so far?
I really admire how people are so open here to talk about what they do. You can really tell that people are doing what they want to do, and that really creates an upbeat and motivating atmosphere. Everything I come across is top notch in terms of quality, and this gives me a high bar to meet when I do my work. It makes me and everyone else that much better.

What is one goal you hope to accomplish during your time at Discovery?
My goal is to just create as many meaningful relationships as I can here at Discovery, along with trying to absorb as much of the different aspects of the company as possible. I have been lucky enough to have been sent to different departments to observe how many of the pieces within the company work together, which has taught me a lot in a short period of time.

If you could guest star on any Discovery show, what would it be and why?
Sons of Guns is easily my favorite show on Discovery right now, with MythBusters and Man vs. Wild coming in a close second and third. I am very good with my hands, and have been building all kinds of things since I was a kid. I also respect and love firearms, and have been around them for nearly my entire life. I could just see working in a gun shop as a great experience, and I think I would really get along with Will and the rest of the team at Red Jacket. They help their community by doing what they love.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your internship experience?
I just want to say that I am very thankful for this opportunity and that Discovery really has taught me a lot in my short time here. It has really been a breath of fresh air to see how a company such as this works from the inside, and this has only further motivated me to try to become a part of something as special as Discovery.

Jake Gyllenhaal Joins Bear for the Return of ‘Man vs. Wild’ Tonight

July 11, 2011 | by aharris

Bear Grylls and Jake GyllenhaalBear Grylls. Jake Gyllenhaal. Discovery Channel‘s Man vs. Wild. Need we say more?

While I’m guessing the answer is no (if you’re a fan of Bear and Jake, like me), I will give you a bit more color. Man vs. Wild is returning with the first of six new episodes that have Bear going from the frozen world of Iceland to the badlands of Utah. And, in tonight’s episode, our well-known survival expert (the show has been credited with saving several lives) brings a new friend, actor Jake Gyllenhaal, to Iceland.

Man vs. Wild Glacier Climbing GetGlue StickerJake took on the two-day challenge with a smile, but clearly he bit off more than he expected (and we know some of the stuff that Bear eats in the wild). Check out a preview from tonight’s episode (airs at 9pm ET/PT) below and make sure to check in on GetGlue to earn your latest merit badge-inspired sticker for your collection.

Discovery Channel Delivers Armchair Adventure with ‘Man vs. Wild’ & ‘Out of the Wild’ Tonight!

Man vs. Wild GetGlue StickersI generally consider myself adventurous — a world traveler, scuba diver and roller coaster fanatic. However, there are some things that make me happy to be an armchair adventurer, like Discovery Channel’s Man vs. Wild and Out of the Wild: Venezuela.

Tonight, Discovery Channel is serving up a health dose of real-world survival, as Bear Grylls takes to Arizona’s Sky Islands to demonstrate how to survive in scorching deserts and on freezing mountains. Following Man vs. Wild (Thursdays at 9pm ET/PT) is a new season of Out of the Wild, as nine ordinary people are dropped off in a remote corner of Venezuela with only the most basic supplies. Their mission? To travel across 70 brutal miles of uncharted terrain back to civilization. The living room couch sounds like a good location to join both of these adventures (check out previews of tonight’s episodes below).

Discovery Channel has also launched its newest set of stickers on GetGlue in conjunction with Man vs. Wild. Check-in while watching tonight (and each Thursday) to earn your own Man vs. Wild merit badges and brag to your friends that you’ve earned “parasite removal” or “advanced frostbite” distinction.
