Discovery Employees Ready to Make an Impact with 3rd Annual ‘Creating Change’

November 14, 2012 | by aharris

Creating Change 2012Months of planning are about to pay off — for our employees and a great group of organizations that we have the pleasure of working with. Creating Change, a 12-hour creative marathon and conference. Discovery employees will volunteer their talents and skills to nonprofits in need of marketing, communications, social media, creative and business services.

Social media is always an area of great interest for the organizations that apply for Creating Change, and this year we’ll be hosting breakout sessions and one-on-one time to provide inspiration and information about this and other disciplines. I’m also excited to share a new microsite we’ve launched for the day at discovery.com/ourimpact. The site will feature updates from all of those taking part in the marathon and conference from both Twitter and Instagram.

We’d like to extend a big welcome to those organizations who have been accepted (listed below) and to everyone who will be joining us in the morning for a day of enlightenment and learning!

To follow along and join the conversation about Creating Change make sure to follow @DiscoveryComm and use the #ourimpact hashtag on Twitter and Instagram!

Getting the Creative Juices Flowing: Creating Change 2012 Application Now Open

September 12, 2012 | by kdelmonico

Here at One Discovery Place we are gearing up for one of my favorite annual Discovery Impact events, Creating Change. Each year, this program harnesses the amazing creative talent we have here at Discovery by making the services of Discovery employees available to non-profits who are seeking some extra muscle behind their marketing, communications and operational needs. Organizations looking to revamp their logo or film a new PSA or develop a community PR plan apply each year to harness the brainpower that results from the 12-hour marathon event and conference in November, and today, we are pleased to announce that the applications are open!

I can personally attest to some of the amazing work I have seen come from these events, so if you or someone you know is working for a charitable organization, the application is open. Spread the word, as we gear up for the best Creating Change yet!

Animal Planet’s R.O.A.R. Matching Campaign Returns, Supporting Seven Nonprofits

August 31, 2012 | by aharris

Animal Planet's R.O.A.R.After a successful campaign last year, Animal Planet’s R.O.A.R. animal advocacy initiative will launch an eight-week campaign to raise funds for seven deserving R.O.A.R. (which stands for Reach Out. Act. Respond.) charities. Through on-air, online and social media calls to action, Animal Planet will introduce fans to these nonprofit organizations and encourage individuals to make a donation, as the network matches their donations up to $120,000!

Click on the links below to get to know these animal welfare non-profits and, starting Saturday, September 1, visit GlobalGiving.org to make a donation.

And, to sweeten the pot, $20,000 has been designated for the top monthly fundraiser ($5,000), the most unique monthly number of donations ($5,000), a “spreading the word” bonus that accounts for the most number of “shares” on Facebook ($5,000), and a judgment award for the overall loudest ROAR (up to $5,000). The matching funds are generated by Animal Planet’s consumer products program, which include pet products and lifestyle products from apparel to toys and home décor. Animal Planet licensees contribute a portion of their sales to R.O.A.R. with the intention of giving something back to the animals the network celebrates daily.

‘Watch and Give’ with Animal Planet on Saturday

November 21, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Want to help pit bulls without leaving your couch?

As part of Animal Planet‘s ongoing commitment to make a positive impact in the animal world, the network is asking viewers to tune in to Pit Bulls and Parolees this Saturday night, November 26, to help drive donations to Villalobos Rescue Center, a nonprofit organization featured in the series. The campaign called “You Watch. We Give.” is part of the network’s nonprofit initiative Reach Out. Act. Respond. (R.O.A.R). Based on the number of viewers who watch the new episode of Pit Bulls and Parolees on Saturday at 10 pm ET/PT, funds will be donated to give thanks to Tia Torres for her tireless dedication to pit bulls.

Last year, the “You Watch. We Give.” campaign yielded a donation of $50,000 and more than one million viewers to become the series’ most-watched episode ever.  The 2010 donations paid for half of Villalobos’ yearly vet bill for the 150 dogs Tia houses. The funds allowed her to keep dogs — like Egypt, who needed hip surgery, and Sheriff, who needed intestinal surgery - healthy and ready for adoption.

Here’s more about the show and this R.O.A.R. initiative:

Creating Change LogoJust over a week ago, One Discovery Place was bustling with employees, nonprofit partners and creativity with Creating Change 2011. And, while last Friday’s post and pictures gave a glimpse into the impact of our 12-hour probono marathon, video captures it event better.

Thank you again to all of our employees and the organizations who let us play a part in achieving their missions.

Creating Change LogoYesterday, we welcomed back representatives from all of the nonprofit organizations we partnered with for Creating Change 2011 to One Discovery Place. Each Discovery team presented their final products — from social media & event strategies to PSAs and websites — to their clients’ delight. Many commented on how they were amazed at what was accomplished during the 12-hour probono marathon, while others marveled at the ability of our employees to really understand their organizations and their missions.

Check out a few of the highlights below and thank you to all of the nonprofits who allowed us to help advance their goals with our creativity!
