This Week in Discovery Buzz…

June 9, 2013 | by aharris

Discovery BuzzThis week began on a solemn note, with the untimely losses of three members of the extended Discovery family – Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young. They left their mark on the weather community and the world, working to learn more about tornadoes and how to improve our understanding of them to save lives. Personally, I had the chance to work with Tim while overseeing social media for Discovery Channel and working on Storm Chasers. As an Oklahoman, I admired him and understood his connection with the beautiful but often violent weather of the plains.

And, while tragedy marked Monday, the Discovery family showed the power of giving back on Friday with our annual Discover Your Impact Day, and in other news:

Yes, I am from Oklahoma. When people find that out, I often get a series of questions: Did I grow up on a farm? (No.) Do I say “soda” or “pop”? (Neither, I call a bubbly beverage Coke, regardless of brand.) One question that I haven’t heard (but I suspect I will in the coming days): Have I ever gone noodling?

Why do I suspect I’ll hear this? On Sunday at 10pm ET/PT, Animal Planet will introduce viewers to Hillbilly Handfishin’ and noodling — the crazy sport where men and women catch catfish with their bare hands and feet. In the new 12-part series, Skipper Bivins and Trent Jackson help city dwellers learn how to noodle catfish with their fingers and toes replacing lures and hooks (while avoiding snakes and other animals that dwell in the murky waters in Oklahoma). Check out one woman’s first time noodling below and find out how to hand fish in a few simple steps. Let’s just say this is a sport I’ll be fine just watching on TV…like boxing or bobsledding.
