Turn Your TV to a New Destination This Memorial Day: Destination America

May 26, 2012 | by aharris

As we mark Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S., people are spending time at their favorite beaches, feasting on delicious foods and enjoying the holiday with friends and family. In fact, many of our prized memories and what make us proud to live in this country are based around people and places, something Discovery Communications will celebrate with the debut of Destination America on Monday, May 28.

Destination America Launch Graphic

From American food and mysteries to explorations of our diverse landscape, Destination America will have something for everyone with the best of travel, adventure, food, home, and natural history on one channel (formerly the home of Planet Green). You can start off by celebrating the holiday with a delicious bite of Americana with BBQ Pitmasters (at 8pm ET/PT) and can look forward to the premieres of:

  • Fast Food Mania (June 3 at 10pm ET/PT): Host Jon Hein (of The Fast Food Show on Howard Stern’s Sirius/XM station) travels across the country (and around the globe) to celebrate our fast food guilty pleasures.
  • Super-Duper Thrill Rides (June 16 at 10pm ET/PT): If you’re a roller coaster aficionado like me, strap in for a look at the most extreme attractions from Cedar Point in Ohio to Universal Studios in Florida.
  • United States of Food (July 8 at 9pm ET/PT): Chef Todd Fisher explores America’s obsession with meat, from bacon to steaks. Carnivores, you have been put on notice.

Of course, there’s more to come later this summer, like Cheating Las Vegas and Ghost Town Gold, so make sure to like Destination America on Facebook and follow @DestAmerica on Twitter for updates…and keep an eye out for the new Destination America iPhone App that will allow you to share your view of what makes this country so great!

Discovery Networks to Participate in First Nationwide Test of Emergency Alert System

November 7, 2011 | by aharris

We’ve all caught them while we’ve been tuning into our favorite networks: regular tests of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). EAS is a national public warning system across broadcasters, cable television systems, radio and other platforms that allows the President to address the American public during a national emergency. The system also may be used on a state or local level to deliver important emergency information, like AMBER alerts.

On Wednesday, November 9 at 2pm ET, the U.S. federal government will be running the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. Distributors will be pushing the signal out across all U.S. networks, including Discovery’s. In response to an FCC request to inform viewers about the nature of the alert, Discovery will be running PSAs and crawls across our networks informing viewers that the 30-second message that will be preempting programming is only a test.

While we hope the Emergency Alert System is rarely needed, we appreciate everyone’s preparedness and understanding.

Employees ‘Creating Change’: Meet Dave Schaefer

November 1, 2011 | by aharris

Creating Change, our probono marathon helping DC-area nonprofits with creative needs, is only 8 days away! So far, we’ve introduced you to Maia Kotlus-Gates and Sheila Hayes, who will be providing social media and creative campaign support. Today, we invite you to get to know Communications’ Dave Schaefer, who will be working with Thanks USA.

Tell us about your current position at Discovery Communications.

As Director of Communications for Emerging Networks, I work to publicize programming and initiatives for Investigation Discovery, Military Channel and Planet Green. It has been an exciting role because I have had the opportunity to watch Investigation Discovery’s growth, from launching a new brand to becoming the fastest-growing network in television. Being able to work directly with talent and pitch their passion for justice, like Keith Beauchamp from The Injustice Files, has been especially rewarding.

Schaefer

What is your proudest creative moment?

Sometimes, if the project lends itself to a creative premium, our team will send tchotchkes to media to bring extra attention to a new program. We especially had fun with Prison Wives, which we launched on Valentine’s Day on Investigation Discovery. We had custom boxes of chocolates (actually chocolate-covered Oreos) sent in creative boxes branded for the new show.

What do you do to get the creative juices flowing?

You never know when a creative idea will come to mind. So, when one does, I usually try to whip out my BlackBerry and send myself an email with the idea no matter what time it is or where I am. I also find my walk to and from work generates some creative ideas – some good, but many that are terrible.

What inspires you to create change in the world?

Having the opportunity to give back to our community is one of the great aspects of working at Discovery Communications. While attending Penn State, I got heavily involved in Dance Marathon, which is the world’s largest student-run philanthropy. Ever since that experience, I have appreciated opportunities to volunteer, and Creating Change is a fantastic program where I can not only invest my time and energy, but hopefully some of my PR skills I have developed while working at Discovery.

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me…

…walking my dog, Wiley, with my wife, Linda — either through Downtown Silver Spring or Rock Creek Park.

What are you most looking forward to during the Creating Change probono marathon event?

The organization I am working with during Creating Change is Thanks USA, and they are also a new partner for Military Channel. So it is exciting to be able to assist this organization directly by helping create a public service announcement that will be used well beyond Military Channel.

‘The Rosie Show’ and ‘Oprah’s Lifeclass’ to be Simulcast Across Five Discovery Nets Tonight

October 10, 2011 | by gweiswasser

The premiere episodes of the new OWN series The Rosie Show and Oprah’s Lifeclass will air concurrently across five Discovery networks tonight at 7pm ET/PT and 8pm ET/PT, respectively. Joining OWN in airing the premieres will be TLC, Investigation Discovery, Discovery Fit & Health and Planet Green.

The Rosie Show is a new daily talk show hosted by Emmy Award-winning actress and comedian Rosie O’Donnell. Funny, high-energy and authentic, no two days of the show will be alike. The show will feature Rosie’s hilarious take on current events, celebrity and human interest guests, comedy and games, live performances by top artists and a behind the scenes look at Rosie — and her staff — as she settles into a new world and embarks upon a new chapter in her life. Comedian, actor and author Russell Brand will be tonight’s first in-studio celebrity guest.

In Oprah’s Lifeclass, Oprah reaches back through the 25-year history of The Oprah Winfrey Show to teach the lessons that matter most to her. Oprah will share her most personal revelations, and what she thinks now about those iconic show moments and guests. The series will also feature a companion online class accompanying the series including actual course work on Oprah.com, for an even more enriching experience. Immediately following the series at 9pm ET/PT, Oprah will be holding live online discussions each night during the series’ premiere week (tonight through Friday) via OWN’s and Oprah’s Facebook pages and on Oprah.com. Join in the discussion and see what Oprah has to say!

Planet Green Revs Up ‘Detroit in Overdrive’

August 2, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Few American cities have been as sadly portrayed as Detroit over the last few years. As someone with deep roots in the Motor City (both of my parents were born and raised there), it has been hard to watch. This Thursday night at 9pm ET/PT, however, Planet Green takes a much more hopeful look at the city and what’s being done there to rebuild and revitalize.

Detroit in Overdrive follows the inspiring stories of several individuals as they do their part not only to bring Detroit back to a place of stability, but to transform it into a new city full of hope and innovation. The three-part documentary will introduce creative thinkers and the skills they bring to the table in hopes of strengthening their community.  Avant-garde art projects, radical new food systems and integral technology for the homeless are just some of the highlights of Detroit in Overdrive.
