Celebrate Halloween with Science & ‘Oddities’

October 29, 2012 | by aharris

Oddities Syringe and TeethAs those of us in the northeast part of the U.S. are huddled indoors waiting for Hurricane Sandy (aka Frankenstorm) to pass, we look toward Halloween (perhaps its just that bowl of candy that could turn into storm rations). And what better way to spend the holiday than with Mike, Evan, Audra and everyone from Oddities and Oddities: San Francisco?

Science has an all-day marathon of both Oddities franchises planned beginning at 9am ET, so indulge your curiosity about the unusual and rare (and meet personalities like the beloved Edgar — vintage clip below)!

America’s Best Bacon, Burgers and Steak Discovered in Destination America’s ‘United States of Food’

July 6, 2012 | by aharris

Destination AmericaThe Fourth of July has already come and gone, but just because our national holiday passed doesn’t mean we have to forget about one of the most uniting forces in America — food. And chef and restauranteur Todd Fisher searches the country high and low for the best bacon, burgers and steaks in Destination America‘s new series United States of Food.

Chef Todd takes his food seriously, and visits eateries with the best and most inventive dishes in the country. He makes stops at smaller businesses, like the Bacon Bacon Truck in San Francisco that serves scrumptious bacon grilled cheeses, and also at larger businesses, like Crif Dogs in New York City (where he spots the record-holding hot dog competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi among the crowd).

The first installment, United States of Bacon, airs this Sunday, July 8 at 10pm ET/PT, and you can tune in (and let your mouth water) the following two Sundays as Chef Todd explores burgers and steaks. Get ready to feast with your eyes!

‘Oddities’ Invades the West Coast Saturdays on Science

It’s one of the oldest sayings in the book: one man’s trash is another man’s two-headed stuffed pigeon. When it comes to the wares sold at Loved to Death, the setting of Science’s Oddities: San Francisco, “unusual antiques” might be a mild descriptor. But, as we know from the original Oddities, there’s certainly a market for mummified cats and pickled hearts among the eccentric.

Loved to Death has been open for three years in the heart of the Haight-Ashbury District in San Francisco. Owner Audra and her staff Korri, Wednesday and Corrinne sell their medical oddities, unique taxidermies and more to clients ranging from street performers to intrigued tourists. After getting to know the Obscura gang, I can only imagine what’s in store when we head out to the West Coast for Oddities: San Francisco, premiering tomorrow at 9pm ET/PT on Science.
