Andy Samberg: Comedian, Writer and Chief Shark Officer

April 20, 2011 | by aharris

Happy Shark WeekAt last week’s NY Upfront Presentation we had a very special guest: Andy Samberg, Discovery Channel‘s first Chief Shark Officer (CSO).

Andy SambergKnown for his work on Saturday Night Live and with The Lonely Island, as CSO Samberg will host the 24th annual Shark Week, coming this summer to Discovery Channel in the U.S. As a part of his duties, Samberg will appear in on-air segments and perhaps dive with some of our finned friends.

Read more about Shark Week on Discovery Blog, and make sure to follow @Discovery and #SharkWeek on Twitter and to “like” the Shark Week Facebook page for sharky goodness year-round. As Tracy Jordan has reminded us on 30 Rock time and time again, “Live every week like it’s Shark Week.”

Discovery’s Day at #BlogWell

November 10, 2010 | by aharris

BlogWell LogoObsessive readers of this blog (do they exist?) may have noticed that we didn’t post yesterday. That’s because we were too busy learning, connecting with other social media enthusiasts/professionals and presenting at GasPedal’s BlogWell Conference, hosted by SAP outside of Philadelphia. The theme of the conference this time around was “How Big Brands Use Social Media,” and the afternoon consisted primarily of case studies about successful social media efforts from a range of very impressive companies.

For example, we heard Scholastic talk about how they use Facebook to energize their customers and create community among teachers, parents and students around books. We also saw their new site — YouAreWhatYouRead.com — which encourages book lovers of all ages to share the books that shaped their lives.

We also had the opportunity to hear from Hershey’s about their S’mores Snacktivity Suite  at BlogHer earlier this year, inviting bloggers to relax by their campfire and enjoy the classic treat (several even received special kits and took the S’mores train from D.C. to NYC). Great presentation, even if it did make the audience (Amber included) crave their gooey goodness.

Additionally, we had the fun experience of doing our own presentation about how Discovery Channel used social media to amplify fan enthusiasm around Shark Week. Thank you to Andy Sernovitz, Kurt Vanderah and the entire GasPedal team for bringing us all together!

If you’re looking for more (we could go on and on about all the great presentations), please check out the live blog coverage (courtesy of the SAP team) from our session and others and the #BlogWell hashtag on Twitter.

Employees ‘Creating Change’: Meet Betsy Clawson

October 21, 2010 | by aharris

Last week, we introduced you to Beth Stewart, one of our many talented employees who will be volunteering their creativity and time to  Discovery Impact: Creating Change — a 12-hour marathon event benefiting nonprofits in need of marketing, communications and creative services. Today, we introduce you to Betsy Clawson from our Global Events team.

Betsy ClawsonTell us about your current position at Discovery Communications.
I am part of the Global Events team and work with departments across Discovery’s network and business divisions to produce events that allow press, clients, consumers and influential audiences the opportunity to positively interact with Discovery’s brands.

You may know me from my work on…
I’ve been with Discovery for over four years and have been fortunate enough to be involved in many amazing projects including the Planet Earth, Shark Week 20th Anniversary and When We Left Earth premiere screenings in New York; CatchCon; the Upfronts; the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge; Silverdocs and many more. However, 2010 has brought some of the most memorable events yet with the premiere screenings of Life in Los Angeles, New York and DC featuring some of this country’s most prestigious orchestras; Phil Harris’ public memorial on Seattle’s Puget Sound; the TLC Summer bash which was hosted on a rooftop overlooking New York’s Fifth Avenue; Discovery’s 25th Anniversary Celebration; The Hub‘s LA launch event complete with giant slide; and most recently Planet Green’s Dean of Invention premiere in Brooklyn which combined bowling and robots… amazing!

Where do you find creative inspiration?
From Discovery of course! A large part of my job entails developing creative solutions to address logistical issues including: set-up, timing, guest flow, messaging and budgetary challenges. Often times by focusing on the content itself I can identify successful ways to better represent the network, while solving the dilemma at hand.

What are you most looking forward to during the Creating Change pro-bono marathon event?
During June’s Discover Your Impact Day, I (like many others) enjoyed getting involved and supporting the local community. I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves again and working with colleagues to help local nonprofit organizations that need assistance articulating their message and learning how to inspire their core audiences through innovative events.

Can you share with us one nonprofit we may not be aware of and a little bit about them?
Three years ago my two and a half year old friend Eliza was diagnosed with late-infantile Metachromatic Leukodystophy (MLD), a progressive and terminal disease that has robed her of the ability to walk, crawl, sit-up, talk, eat independently and see. To help raise awareness for this and other rare neurological diseases, Eliza’s parents have helped found Teamgive. Teamgive is an organization that brings together active professionals to participate in community and corporate-sponsored charitable cycling and similar athletic events to support research for the treatment and cures of rare neurological diseases like MLD.

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me…
Wait is there an option not to work…? (Kidding, of course. ) You’ll find me at the movie theater, with family and friends, or spending time with the kids that I have the great opportunity of sharing stories with and teaching silly songs each week.

If you’re with a nonprofit interested in applying to participate in Creating Change,  there’s one day left. Simply, fill out the online application by Friday, October 22!

Discovery Channel Makes Its Mark on Thursday Night

October 1, 2010 | by aharris

After 25 years, Discovery Channel and its programming have become a part of pop culture around the world — from Morgan Freeman telling Jim Carrey that he should watch more Discovery Channel in Bruce Almighty to the fact that Shark Week has become a virtual holiday in the U.S.

On Thursday, we were happy to see Discovery Channel mentioned in two of the night’s most popular shows. On 30 Rock, Tracy Jordan made his way to the hospital for the birth of the newest addition to his family and, needing a free ride, hailed a generous cabbie — Cash Cab‘s Ben Bailey. Jordan turns out to have a knack for the game and some pretty tough trivia (check out the episode at the end of this post). I must also note that Tracy Jordan has given us one of our favorite lines: “Live every week like it’s Shark Week.” Thanks, TJ.

Speaking of Shark Week, the iconic programming event made its way onto CSI last night as well. The CSI episode centers around an investigation of a murder, but was the murderer a human or a shark? One of the suspects even invokes MythBusters in the interrogation room… an interesting tactic, I think.

Do you have any favorite Discovery Channel references in pop culture? We’d love to hear about them!
