Creating Change LogoYesterday, we welcomed back representatives from all of the nonprofit organizations we partnered with for Creating Change 2011 to One Discovery Place. Each Discovery team presented their final products — from social media & event strategies to PSAs and websites — to their clients’ delight. Many commented on how they were amazed at what was accomplished during the 12-hour probono marathon, while others marveled at the ability of our employees to really understand their organizations and their missions.

Check out a few of the highlights below and thank you to all of the nonprofits who allowed us to help advance their goals with our creativity!

Successes Outweigh Hurdles for Discovery Employees Creating Change

This Creating Change post is from guest blogger Cydney Cappello, Social Media Specialist for TLC and Discovery Fit & Health. Stay tuned to Discovery Blog for a few more updates on Creating Change 2011 in the coming days.

The clock is ticking and the doors at the Discovery Communications headquarters are about to close, but there is still much to accomplish before tomorrow’s Creating Change presentations.

From creating PR and marketing campaigns to website overhauls, Discovery employees have been working diligently for the past 12 hours to help nonprofits in need. With tight time constraints and no budget, these teams have seen their fair share of hurdles today.

For Beth Stewart, volunteering for Shenandoah National Park Trust, the biggest obstacle is finding the right asset, which cost money, in the small amount of time they have to work on their full marketing campaign. “We’re really excited about our project,” Stewart said. “But just trying to execute it has been a struggle.”

Creating Change first-timer Andrea Zak agreed that the quick turnaround on these projects has been tough, but she’s hopeful that Lydia’s House in Southeast will like the results. “The visual element of their website really needed a complete overhaul, but we’re really looking forward to their reactions,” she added.

Zak’s group has decided to design a WordPress blog for their client because of the higher functionality of the layout, and it allows the client to easily update and maintain it in house.

One of the highlights of the day came from Rekha Patricio’s team, working with Shepherd’s Table, since they were able to sit down with their client. “We were able to meet with her about midway through the day, and she was really thrilled,” teammate Doug Gunster said. Having her there allowed the team to go ahead with the final details, Rekha added. They were able to go above and beyond their original brochure idea and now have created a brochure that acts as a storybook and a poster that they can use as visuals at public events.

All of the teams are excited for their presentations tomorrow and have put in a hard day’s work, and Discovery’s impact clearly has been felt.
