Howdy from SXSW!

March 8, 2013 | by kdelmonico

SXSW 2013 LogoBefore I get flack for the headline, I must confirm that I’m an Okie (born and raised), so I still reserve the right to use an occasional “howdy” or “y’all” periodically…as in when I’ve just landed in Austin for SXSW Interactive!

Saturday is Discovery Communications’ big day – with a panel, Animal Planet’s Cats Live Here! party with friends from the CatVidFest & our own Jackson Galaxy and The Captains’ Concert at the iconic Stubb’s. While there’s much to do before then (like test an exclusive, cringeworthy preview Deadliest Catch fans will get of the upcoming season during tomorrow’s Twitter for Tough Guys panel), I can’t help but look forward to everything else that comes with SXSW: insightful panels and keynotes, meaningful opportunities to catch up with business partners, great people watching, and food and music to die for.

We’ll be keeping you updated on all of our SXSW activities on Twitter, so make sure to follow @DiscoveryComm, @Discovery, @DeadliestCatch & @AnimalPlanet for the latest. We hope to see many of you around Austin, and chime in below with your impressions of this year’s Festival!

‘Deadliest Catch’ Captains Set Course for SXSW 2013

February 25, 2013 | by aharris

The Captains' ConcertMarch is fast approaching, which means it’s almost time for SXSW! While I’ve attended before and HowStuffWorks’ Josh Clark & Chuck Bryant from Stuff You Should Know have podcasted from Interactive, this year’s going to be a bit different — as Captains Sig Hansen, Johnathan Hillstrand and Keith Colburn of Deadliest Catch will be making their SXSW debut.

I have a feeling that Austin is the Captains’ type of town, and I hope you’ll join us for two special Catch events:

Deadliest Catch‘s Twitter for Tough Guys
Ever wonder what Sig, Johnathan and Keith really think about social media and how Discovery Channel has woven social into the show? This panel will feature the three Captains talking with our own Josh Weinberg about just that. Think CatchCon meets SXSW.
Saturday, March 9 | 12:30-1:30pm |Hyatt Regency Austin | Texas Ballroom 1-4
Add it to your SXSWi schedule!

Deadliest Catch Presents: The Captains’ Concert
Cap off your Saturday night at SXSW Interactive with a night of music, mingling and indie rock at this special, FREE concert featuring Black Pistol Fire, Quiet Company and The Tontons — hosted by your favorite Captains!

Creating Change 2012: That’s a Wrap

November 19, 2012 | by kdelmonico

As a third-year veteran of Creating Change, I can honestly say this is always a crazy day – crazy inspiring, crazy exhausting, crazy busy and crazy fun. Not only is it a great creative exercise to think outside of my normal day job and work on a project for one of our nonprofit partners, it’s always an awesome experience to work with some of the other talented Discovery employees that I don’t always interact with on a day-to-day basis. I always complete Creating Change with a newfound respect for my creative, smart and giving colleagues here at Discovery Communications.

Thursday and Friday marked the third annual Creating Change probono marathon, resulting in the completion of 32 different projects for 25 nonprofit partners, with deliverables ranging from print ads, to PSAs, to IT assessments. Hours of hard work during Thursday’s marathon culminated in successful presentations across the board on Friday, ending the week with a job well-done!
