Meet the Interns: Digital Distribution’s TJ Cooney

March 22, 2012 | by aharris

In the fourth installment of our Meet the Interns series, you will get to know TJ Cooney. TJ is a senior at The Catholic University of America and is currently spending the spring semester with Discovery’s Digital Distribution department at our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Why did you apply to intern with Discovery?
I applied to intern at Discovery Communications because I have loved their networks’ shows for as long as can remember. Since entering school, I have seen how Discovery has made it part of their mission to educate the world, and that is something I really want to be a part of.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you were selected to intern with Discovery?
My family was thrilled. They all knew that I have wanted to work here for as long as I can remember and were very supportive. They also knew that I interned and worked very hard at other places in order to get the opportunity to intern here, and I am exactly where I want to be right now.

Tell us about one of the projects you are currently working on.
The largest project I am working on is an industry landscape study, where I am basically creating a guide detailing how our digital distribution partners (such as Netflix, Apple and Amazon) are displaying our content, which can also be a tool to teach others about the services.

What has been your favorite aspect of your internship with Discovery so far?
I really admire how people are so open here to talk about what they do. You can really tell that people are doing what they want to do, and that really creates an upbeat and motivating atmosphere. Everything I come across is top notch in terms of quality, and this gives me a high bar to meet when I do my work. It makes me and everyone else that much better.

What is one goal you hope to accomplish during your time at Discovery?
My goal is to just create as many meaningful relationships as I can here at Discovery, along with trying to absorb as much of the different aspects of the company as possible. I have been lucky enough to have been sent to different departments to observe how many of the pieces within the company work together, which has taught me a lot in a short period of time.

If you could guest star on any Discovery show, what would it be and why?
Sons of Guns is easily my favorite show on Discovery right now, with MythBusters and Man vs. Wild coming in a close second and third. I am very good with my hands, and have been building all kinds of things since I was a kid. I also respect and love firearms, and have been around them for nearly my entire life. I could just see working in a gun shop as a great experience, and I think I would really get along with Will and the rest of the team at Red Jacket. They help their community by doing what they love.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your internship experience?
I just want to say that I am very thankful for this opportunity and that Discovery really has taught me a lot in my short time here. It has really been a breath of fresh air to see how a company such as this works from the inside, and this has only further motivated me to try to become a part of something as special as Discovery.

Meet the Interns: Discovery Channel’s Anastacia Darby

February 27, 2012 | by aharris

Last week, we profiled Chris Najmi, the first of several spring semester Discovery interns that we will be introducing you to via Discovery Blog. In today’s Meet the Interns installment, you’ll meet Anastacia Darby, a sophomore at American University in Washington, D.C. who is studying International Communications and Business Marketing. For more information about internships and careers and Discovery Communications, make sure to visit careers.discovery.com!

What department are you interning with?
I am interning in Discovery Channel‘s Program Development and Production department at the Silver Spring headquarters.

Why did you apply to intern with Discovery?
Aside from a general love for the network, I took a particular interest in Discovery after working as a Production Assistant on Seasons 1 and 2 of Sons of Guns, which filmed in my hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. From this, I knew that I wanted to try to continue working with the network when I returned to school here in D.C. Since my previous experience was in production, working in the Program Development and Production department has given me the unique opportunity to understand and participate in the process that leads to that point.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you were selected to intern with Discovery?
Everyone was extremely excited and impressed. It is definitely one of those internships that you can’t wait to tell people about!

Tell us about one of the projects you are currently working on.
I am responsible for a few ongoing projects, such as producing a bi-weekly reports spanning competitor, top production company, and other network news and ratings.

What has been your favorite aspect of your internship with Discovery so far?
By far, my favorite aspect of my internship has been sitting in on meetings with the Development team.

What is one goal you hope to accomplish during your time with the Discovery Channel team?
I hope to gain a better understanding of the development process, from idea conception to production hand off, and the factors that drive the decision-making processes along the way.

If you could guest star on any Discovery network show, what would it be and why?
I would love to be a surprised contestant on Cash Cab someday…though, honestly, I am camera shy and probably wouldn’t sign the release.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your internship experience?
Everyone in my department has been so welcoming! I instantly felt like a part of the team which makes for a truly great work environment!

Stephanie plans a surprise anniversary bash, which almost backfires when it gets posted a day early on the company website chatroom. Check out some sneak peek videos from Sons of Guns.

Then at 10pm ET/PT, One Man Army, Discovery’s new competition show hosted by former Green Beret Mykel Hawke of Man, Woman, Wild, pits four men from law enforcement, military and extreme sports backgrounds against each other in tests of speed, strength and intelligence.
