Animal Planet Travels to ‘Madagascar’ on Sunday Night

April 29, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Many of us here at Discovery Communications woke up at an ungodly hour this morning to turn on TLC‘s coverage of the Royal Wedding. From the romantic dress to the pomp of Westminster Abbey, we were transported to another country and, it felt at times, another era.

This Sunday, viewers won’t need to wake up early, but they can travel to an even more exotic location — Madagascar — on Animal Planet‘s upcoming special Madagascar at 8pm ET/PT. For 65 million years Madagascar was lost to the world in splendid isolation — undiscovered and untouched by man. Left to its own devices, it became a hot bed of evolution, creating the greatest concentration of unique creatures anywhere on the planet. More than 80 percent of Madagascar’s animals and plants are found nowhere else on Earth. Recognized as one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots, this is an Alice-in-Wonderland island of weird animals, strange plants and extraordinary landscapes. New species are still being discovered every year.

With conservationists currently placing Madagascar as a top priority, now is the perfect time to paint the definitive portrait of this truly remarkable island country. Tune in on Sunday night (May 1) to experience this remarkable land from your own living room, and click here to learn more about conservation efforts in Madagascar.

Some of the shows airing during Royal Wedding Week on TLC include:

  • Charles and Di: Once Upon a Time (Sunday, April 24 at 7 pm ET/PT): Relive the most-watched wedding of the 20th century.  One billion people, all glued to the television on July 29, 1981, as Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. This two-hour special takes viewers back to that very day, replaying the romantic moments some may remember, as well as fascinating, never-seen-before footage.  From the quirky to the queenly, poptoid graphics on screen reveal little-known facts and behind-the-scenes trivia about what made this a fairytale wedding come true.
  • Untold Stories of a Royal Bridesmaid (wt) (Sunday, April 24 at 9pm ET/PT): Thirty years ago, India Hicks was a royal bridesmaid in the wedding of the century when her cousin and godfather, Prince Charles, married Lady Diana. Now, India (fashion model, television host and world renowned designer) is revisiting that day with people who were there and speculating about what the wedding of this century will be like when Prince William marries Kate Middleton.
  • Wild About Prince Harry (Monday, April 25 at 10pm ET/PT): With his brother William about to tie the knot, Prince Harry, at 26, takes over the top spot on the list of the world’s most eligible bachelors. Wild About Prince Harry asks this question: just how did a teen, so troubled after his mother’s death, manage to transform himself into a war hero, a charity campaigner, and a royal pin-up worthy of best man status?

That’s not all… TLC’s Monte Durham from Say Yes To the Dress: Atlanta will be serving as TLC’s official Royal Wedding Blogger. Follow his blog, and “like” TLC Weddings on Facebook for all of latest updates on TLC’s Royal Wedding lineup.

January 12, 2011 | by gweiswasser

Do you like to save money? Do you like free stuff?

Ok, who doesn’t? But some people take this desire to an extreme. Last month, TLC aired a one-hour special called Extreme Couponing, which profiled four shopaholics who use coupons to save thousands of dollars and amass huge stockpiles of goods. These shoppers go dumpster diving for coupons and spend hours a day searching the internet for great deals.

Their reward? Shockingly low totals at the checkout line:

Due to the great interest in this special – it attracted 2.1 million viewers  and ”Extreme Couponing” trended on Twitter on the night of the special – TLC has announced that Extreme Couponing will return as a special this spring. Keep an eye out for it! And to tide you over, here are some more video clips from the special.

Happy clipping!
