‘Creating Change’ Returns, Discovery Accepting Applications from Nonprofits

September 8, 2011 | by aharris

Creating Change LogoUPDATE: Deadline extended to Sunday, October 2!

Last November, I had the privilege of participating in Discovery Communications’ first Creating Change pro bono event — where employees across the company lent their creativity and talent to local nonprofits in need of marketing, communications, social media and creative support. Today, Discovery’s announcing the return of the Discovery Impact initiative, along with the call for applications from nonprofit organizations.

Creating Change 2010 brought together over 200 employees in Silver Spring working on campaigns for 40 nonprofits — everything from promotional materials and press kits to event strategies and social media campaigns. My colleague Matt and I worked with Us Helping Us, drafting their first social media strategy. As a result, this was included in a grant proposal and the D.C.-based organization that provides programs and services aimed at reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS in the black gay community received $74,000 from Kaiser Permanente to support their social media strategy, including the creation of a social media coordinator position. This is just one of many examples of how we were able to support a great group of very worthy nonprofits.

Needless to say, I believe in the creative power of our employees and in the many organizations that work year-round to better our communities. This year’s 12-hour marathon event will take place on November 9 in Silver Spring, MD and, as with last year, nonprofits will be invited to participate in courses and workshops hosted by Discovery.

If you are involved with or know of a nonprofit org that would be interested in participating in Creating Change, invite them to go online to submit their application by September 27 (selected organizations will be announced in mid-October). We look forward to working with a new batch of passionate nonprofits and making an even greater impact!

‘Creating Change’ Update: Us Helping Us Receives Social Media Grant

Discovery Impact: Creating Change LogoJust over a month ago, I had the pleasure of working with Us Helping Us, People Into Living — a D.C.-based nonprofit that provides innovative programs and services aimed at reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS in the black gay community and beyond — as a part of Discovery Impact: Creating Change.

Us Helping Us LogoWorking with my colleague Matt, we developed a comprehensive social media strategy and gave Us Helping Us a tangible start with a new presence on Facebook. As luck would have it, Creating Change came the week that Us Helping Us was presenting a grant application to Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic; and this we week we found out that Us Helping Us received the grant for $74,000 to use towards their social media strategy and outreach.

With the grant, the Us Helping Us team will leverage  social platforms to reach out to many audiences — including, most importantly, the men for which it provides live-saving and life-improving services every day.  Social media has the power to inform, entertain and, as we are reminded here, make a difference in people’s lives.
