Suddenlink and Discovery Communications Announce Long-Term Distribution Agreement

Discovery Communications LogoSuddenlink and Discovery Communications today announced the renewal of their long-term distribution agreement, allowing Suddenlink to continue delivery of Discovery’s unparalleled family of 13 U.S. networks.  The agreement supports both companies’ goal to deliver the highest-quality content across multiple platforms.

As part of the new multi-year, multi-platform agreement, Suddenlink TV customers will have continued access to Discovery’s U.S. networks and VOD content including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, The Hub Network (to become Discovery Family Channel on October 13), American Heroes Channel, Discovery Fit & Health (to become Discovery Life Channel on January 15, 2015), Discovery en Español, Discovery Familia, Velocity and Destination America.

Toyota and Discovery Education Announce Finalists for Toyota Teen Driver Video Challenge

Toyota Teen DriverToday, Toyota and Discovery Education announced the top ten finalists in the annual Toyota Teen Driver Video Challenge, the nation’s premier teen safe driving program. Beginning today and continuing for the next two weeks, these top ten inspirational videos will appear online for public voting to not only determine the grand prize winner, but to also send a national reminder about the importance of safe teen driving.

Now in its third year, the Toyota Teen Driver Video Challenge, a key component of an ongoing partnership between Toyota and Discovery Education, invites teens across the country to create short videos to inspire their friends to drive more safely and avoid distractions.  Over 1,000 videos were submitted as part of the challenge. The top ten finalists’ videos address unsafe driving habits and how distracted driving can change lives forever.

For the next two weeks, the general public can visit to view the top ten videos and decide the winner by voting for their favorite. The teen who garners the most votes will win a $15,000 cash prize and be given the opportunity to work with a Discovery film crew to re-create their video as a professional, TV-ready PSA which is eligible to air on Discovery’s family of networks. The second place prize is a $10,000 cash prize and a behind-the-scenes trip for two to a Velocity show. The third place prize is a $7,500 cash prize.

Last year’s winning video from Ryan Johnston of Corona, California took a humorous look at what driving distractions may have looked like a hundred years ago, while also sending a serious message to teens about the importance of road safety. His re-created PSA ran across Discovery’s family of networks.

Toyota Teen Driver, a partnership between Toyota and Discovery Education that offers free, online resources for teens, parents and teachers, is part of TeenDrive365, Toyota’s comprehensive initiative designed to help teens and families navigate their teen’s first years behind the wheel. Building on the programs and resources Toyota has offered for more than a decade, the program offers a collection of online tools, events, expert advice and tips as well as social media elements.

Of course, no Upfront presentation would be complete without our dynamic talent joining the event – from Joby Ogwyn of Discovery Channel’s Everest Jump Live to June Shannon and Alana Thompson of TLC’s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo to OWN’s Tyler Perry, the Discovery family will be in full force today.

‘AmeriCARna’ Premieres Tonight on Velocity

AmericarnaTonight, Velocity will take automobile enthusiasts on a wild ride through American car history with new series, AmeriCARna, premiering at 8PM ET/PT.

With three-time NASCAR champion Ray Evernham at the wheel, Velocity will lead viewers on a cross-country trek, chasing down the cars that had a profound impact on shaping America’s national identity. From the inception of American racing at the turn of 20th century, to the Woody wagons that defined California culture in the 50’s and 60’s, to the infamous drag strips of the 70’s, automotive history has left an indelible imprint on the American experience and our cultural DNA.

In tonight’s premiere episode, host Ray Evernham meets up with surfing legend and revolutionary waterman, Laird Hamilton, to explore the iconic Woody Wagon, a staple in the beach community adopted by surfers nationwide as a fitting chariot to transport their gear. Additional episodes feature historical automotive insight from famed director Ron Howard (Arrested Development, The DaVinci Code, Apollo 13) , music legend Mike Love (The Beach Boys),Country superstar Brad Paisley, and Hot Rod racing guru Don Prudholme.
