Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership’s ‘Inside Story’ Now Available Digitally

September 17, 2013 | by aharris

Inside Story Key ArtI’ve written a few times here about a passion project for many at Discovery and beyond: Inside Story. The film, produced by Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership and Quizzical Pictures, has been seen in African movie theaters and broadcast into homes across the continent, and now it’s available in the U.S. online through iTunes, Google Play, Amazon and other digital platforms. Inside Story will roll out across additional services through December 2013, and its worldwide free, on-demand launch will be on December 1, 2013 — in commemoration of World AIDS Day.

Inside Story stars Kevin Ndege Mamboleo (Changing Times) as Kalu, a gifted footballer who moves from rural Kenya to urban Johannesburg to follow his dream and support his family. His path becomes more challenging when he falls in love with the coach’s daughter, played by Kendra Etufunwa (Jacob’s Cross), and realizes he might be HIV-positive. Newcomers Mamboleo and Etufunwa are joined by international stars including Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Black Sails, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Hotel Rwanda, 24) and Fana Mokoena (World War Z, Safe House).

Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership’s ‘Inside Story’ Makes North American Premiere

January 16, 2012 | by aharris

Last week, Silver Spring rolled out the red carpet for the North American premiere of a new film that seeks to revolutionize HIV/AIDS education for millions in sub-Saharan Africa, Inside Story: The Science of HIV/AIDS. Hosted at the beautiful AFI Silver, the event brought together several members of the pan-African cast and crew, leaders in the eradication of HIV/AIDS — including Ambassador Eric Goosby, United States Global AIDS Coordinator, African dignitaries and partners who helped bring the project to fruition.

The message of the film is simple: knowledge is power. It’s a message shared by the film’s protagonist, Kalu, as we follow his soccer ambitions and struggles along the way. The idea for the film, produced by Curious Pictures South Africa, came about when Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership was assessing community and educational needs among its Learning Centers. Six years later and thanks to the support of generous partners, including the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Chevron, Discovery Communications, Access Bank, the South African Department of Trade and Industry, SEACOM and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the team is firming up plans for an expansive distribution — from African cinemas, free-to-air broadcasts and DVDs paired with teaching guides.

You can watch the extended trailer for Inside Story online and keep up with the film here and by liking the Inside Story Facebook page. We’ve also included a look at the North American premiere, which followed a warm reception in Johannesburg lat month, below.

DCGEP Commemorates World AIDS Day with World Premiere of ‘Inside Story’ in Johannesburg

Inside Story Premiere - Noboa, Etufunwa and Consul General Earl Miller - Smaller

While my day-to-day role at Discovery revolves around social media, I have the privilege of working with the passionate and talented Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership (DCGEP) team to help promote their nonprofit initiatives around the world educating underserved communities through the power of media.

Today, World AIDS Day, is a very special day for DCGEP. Just a few hours ago they hosted the world premiere of Inside Story: The Science of HIV/AIDS in Johannesburg South Africa (photos below). This feature film is aimed at educating millions across sub-Saharan Africa through the story of Kalu, a gifted soccer player who unknowingly contracts HIV. Inside Story takes us into Kalu’s personal journey and into his body through realistic CGI animations that will bring audiences face to face with the virus — from the moment of infection to treatment with anti-retroviral medications.

According to UNAIDS, there are more than 22.5 million people in sub-Saharan Africa living with HIV; 5.6 million in South Africa alone. But even now, 30 years into the pandemic, the basic science of how HIV works is still a mystery to most…and that’s where Inside Story comes in. I invite you to view the trailer below and learn more about the project and DCGEP’s partners, which will see the film distributed theatrically, on free-to-air TV and through grassroots efforts in 2012.

Knowledge is power, and I look forward to keeping you updated on the impact of Inside Story on the African continent and beyond.

Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership Begins Production on ‘Inside Story’ in South Africa

June 14, 2011 | by aharris

Inside StoryDiscovery Channel Global Education Partnership (DCGEP) is known for transforming the lives of millions of students around the world with the use of media as part of the classroom experience in its innovative Learning Centers. However, last week, DCGEP began production in South Africa on a new project — Inside Story: The Science of HIV/AIDS.

The film combines non-fiction and fiction storytelling to unravel the science behind of the disease, and it will premiere in time for World AIDS Day later this year. DCGEP’s Aric Noboa and Theo Smith are currently on the ground in Johannesburg and, with the talented team at Curious Productions, director Rolie Nikiwe and an all-star cast, they are making waves with a completely new approach to HIV/AIDS education.

Inside Story follows the journey of Kalu, a Kenyan soccer player on his way to South Africa. He falls in love with the coach’s daughter and finds out he is HIV positive. Consequently along the way, Kalu takes us on an journey inside his body, demystifying HIV/AIDS.

Thanks to the generous support of PEPFAR, Chevron, The South African Department of Trade and Industry, Access Bank and SEACOM (in addition to Discovery), the film will be produced and distributed across sub-Saharan Africa — giving people information that they can use to make informed decisions about their health. Aric has recounted for me several times the reactions he’s witnessed first hand to screening test animations from the film with South African audiences, including an HIV-positive man who broke into tears at finally being shown the disease he is living with daily. This is only an indication of the power of film, and Inside Story in particular.

Meet some of the cast from Inside Story below and make sure to like Inside Story on Facebook and to follow DCGEP on Twitter to get updates from the set and more!

Help Bring ‘Inside Story’ to Life, Make a Difference on World AIDS Day

December 1, 2010 | by aharris

Inside StoryAs we commemorate World AIDS Day today, it’s a time not only to raise awareness for the seriousness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic globally but also to find ways to take action and create an impact today… and beyond.

For this reason, I am incredibly excited about a new initiative, Inside Story: The Science of HIV/AIDS, from our nonprofit Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership. DCGEP has been on the forefront of bringing life-changing education to students and underserved communities around the world — from sharing the wonders of space exploration to information about the prevention of malaria. Inside Story will expand on that mission with the help of a feature-length film that combines the best of fiction and non-fiction storytelling to unravel the mystery of HIV and empower millions across sub-Saharan Africa with the knowledge they need to make informed health decisions.

Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership and its partners are hoping to begin production in 2011, but first they need to raise the final 6% of funds needed to start filming. And, through a new GlobalGiving campaign for Inside Story, individuals can lend their support to this initiative.

According to recent estimates by UNAIDS, 22.5 million people in sub-Saharan Africa were living with HIV in 2009, a  number that has grown over 10% since 2001. Inside Story will fill the need to reach adults and children and educate them about the causes and effects of HIV/AIDS.  As Ben Plumley, CEO of Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation explains:

Inside Story is an important project, addressing a gap that our field has not yet been able to fill. Working daily to help the millions of Africans affected by HIV/AIDS, I am excited about DCGEP’s efforts and hope individuals and other public and private entities will join me in supporting it.”

We invite you to consider making a donation to DCGEP’s Inside Story through GlobalGiving and to help us spread the word — via Facebook and Twitter, to your family and friends.
