Calling All Young Scientists!

January 11, 2013 | by kdelmonico

Do you know any curious kids who have a flair for science? If so, they could be the winner of the next Discovery Education 3m Young Scientist Challenge. The annual competition recently announced its 15th iteration, in which students in grades 5-8 are encouraged to embrace their love of science by creating a video explaining how we could solve a real-world problem that falls into the category of How We Work, How We Live or How We Play.

Evaluated on their creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation, ten finalists will be selected to participate in an exclusive summer mentorship program working directly with a 3M scientist, culminating in a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, MN for the chance to win $25,000 and the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. This week, some of the best and brightest students from across the country gathered at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota to showcase their scientific smarts and compete for the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” The competition was the culmination of a three-month collaboration with 3M scientists as they created their personal innovations as a part of a summer mentoring program — going from concept to prototype — with the goal of solving an everyday problem.

Earlier today, Discovery Education and 3M announced the results, as 14-year-old Deepika Kurup from Nashua, New Hampshire was named the winner of the 2012 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her innovative, cost effective and sustainable water-purification system. Her prototype, which harnesses solar energy to disinfect contaminated water, can help improve the lives of the 1.1 billion people around the world who lack access to clean drinking water. Kurup and nine other finalists shared their completed innovations with a panel of judges, including Danny Forster of Science‘s Build it Bigger.

The remaining finalists also received a variety of prizes from Discovery Education and 3M. The second, third and fourth place winners each received a $1,000 cash prize and a trip from Discovery Student Adventures to Costa Rica. Congratulations to:

  • Carolyn Jons , Eden Prairie High School in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, second place
  • Anin Sayana, Bellarmine College Preparatory in Cupertino, California, third place
  • Anishaa Sivakumar, Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvannia, fourth place
  • Aidan Dwyer, Northport High School in Northport, New York
  • Naren Gaurav, Meadow Park Summa Middle School in Beaverton, Oregon
  • Brandon Gong , Garden City Middle School in Garden City, New York
  • Chase Lewis, homeschooled in Chapel Hill, North Carolina
  • Gabriel Mesa, Canton Intermediate School in Canton, Connecticut
  • Patrick Shea, Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville, Illinois

Discovery Education and 3M Name Young Scientist Challenge Finalists

June 28, 2012 | by aharris

Science rocks! Student scientists across the country challenged themselves to think outside the box when they entered the 14th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge in January, and today Discovery Education and 3M have announced the 10 finalists. Discovery Education teamed up with 3M to get students in grades 5-8 to create a new innovative object that facilitates a problem in everyday life, and they are offering a $25,000 prize to the winner.

This summer, the 10 finalists have the opportunity to work with a 3M scientist in a mentorship program and create a prototype of the invention they described in their submission videos. The competition will culminate at 3M Headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota in October, where students will individually present the problem they identified in everyday life and their prototype. The winner will receive $25,000, a trip from Discovery Student Adventures and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” Congratulations to the finalists!

The finalists are:

  • Aidan Dwyer, Northport, N.Y., Northport Middle School
  • Naren Gaurev, Beaverton, Ore., Meadow Park Summa Middle School
  • Brandon Gong, Garden City, N.Y., Garden City Middle School
  • Carolyn Jons, Eden Prairie, Minn., Central Middle School
  • Deepika Kurup, Nashua, N.H., Fairgrounds Middle School
  • Chase Lewis, Chapel Hill, N.C., Homeschool
  • Gabriel Mesa, Canton, Conn., Canton Intermediate School
  • Anin Sayana, Cupertino, Calif., Challenger School
  • Patrick Shea, Jacksonville, Ill., Our Saviour School

Discovery Education & 3M Are Searching for America’s Top Young Scientist

January 10, 2012 | by aharris

DE3MYSC LogoFor the past thirteen years, Discovery has sought out the brightest young minds in grades 5-8 to solve everyday problems with the power of science…and the search is on again. Today, Discovery Education and 3M announced the opening of the 14th annual Young Scientist Challenge, asking students to create a short video explaining the science behind their solution to an everyday problem in one of these three categories:

  • The Way We Move
  • The Way We Keep Ourselves Healthy
  • The Way We Make a Difference

Evaluated on their creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation, 10 finalists will be selected to participate in a summer mentorship with a 3M scientist. During the program, each student-scientist will be challenged to create an innovation that solves a problem in society, with each finalist receiving a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, to compete in the final challenge in October 2012.

So, reach out to that budding scientist or educator you know, and help Discovery Education and 3M find the best and the brightest! For more information on the Challenge, don’t forget to swing by www.youngscientistchallenge.com.
