July 29, 2009
(Silver Spring, Md.) Jason R. Carey, executive producer for Animal Planet's successful WHALE WARS and JOCKEYS series, has been promoted to vice president of production for the network and will report directly to Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager for Animal Planet Media. Carey is based in the network's New York office. His promotion is effectively immediately.
In his new role, Carey will oversee the network's current series and will work closely with Kaplan and the entire executive team to help shape the next phase of new content. While maintaining his executive producer oversight for key series, Carey's role and responsibilities have expanded to include partnering with the development team to produce new show concepts while maintaining and improving the quality and integrity of hundreds of hours of original content.
"Jason has already had an enormous impact on shows which have transformed the network," explained Kaplan. "His keen ability to work with diverse personalities, distinct voices and disparate perspectives - combined with his striking creative insight and deep experience in production - will ensure the continued excellence of our content and support our ability to be the best partners to the best talent in the production community."
Carey joined Animal Planet in 2006 as an executive producer and has worked on a number of shows that were integral in the brand's relaunch in 2008, including ESCAPE TO CHIMP EDEN and THE GRIZZLY MAN DIARIES. He is also the executive producer for the upcoming limited series INTO THE PRIDE and the two-hour special WEREWOLVES: THE DARK SURVIVORS. Prior to joining Animal Planet, Carey worked in several areas of production including directing and producing for major entertainment destinations, such as CBS, HBO, Showtime, TBS and VH-1. Carey received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of the Puget Sound and an Associate Degree in Video Production from the Colorado Institute of Art.
