April 24, 2007

(Silver Spring, MD) Viewers rank the Discovery Channel the highest-quality TV network (seventh consecutive year), according to results released today in the 2007 Beta Research Brand Identity of Basic Cable/Broadcast Networks Study. The network also earned #1 rankings in a host of other key study categories in which viewers call the Discovery Channel their favorite channel; most distinctive; bold; and, for the eighth straight year, as #1 in having many original series. Viewers also rank the Discovery Channel #1 among networks deemed entertaining and informative (tie).

“We are very proud to have a network experiencing such ratings success while remaining strongly committed to quality—a rarity in TV today,” said Bill Goodwyn, president, Domestic Distribution and Enterprises, Discovery Communications. “We remain committed to delivering the most unique and captivating programming possible at Discovery Networks for the enjoyment of our viewers and the benefit of our distribution partners.”

The results of today’s study coincide with a surge in ratings for core Discovery Channel programs like PLANET EARTH and DEADLIEST CATCH. The Discovery Channel was up 15% in primetime delivery among adults 25-54 for first quarter 2007 versus first quarter 2006, driving 23% of cable’s overall growth (2%). Discovery has logged five quarters in a row of year-over-year gains in adults 25-54 and six quarters of growth in households. Each weekly installment of the landmark series PLANET EARTH has earned over a 3.0HH rating in each of its premieres and the series has drawn more than 50 million viewers (cume) since its debut on March 25.
