February 11, 2008
(Silver Spring, Md.) Discovery Communications announced today the appointment of Clark Bunting as the President of the newly created Emerging Networks group and the promotion of Carole Tomko to President, Discovery Studios, adding to her duties as General Manager, Discovery Health Channel, FitTV and Discovery Kids Channel. The announcement was made today by Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav, to whom Bunting will report and Discovery COO Mark Hollinger, to whom Tomko will report.
As president of Discovery’s Emerging Networks Group, Bunting will lead the programming, marketing, scheduling, development and online efforts for Science Channel, Investigation Discovery (ID), and Military Channel.
"We wanted a big gun to manage Science Channel, ID and the portfolio of Emerging Networks and we did not need to look far," said Zaslav. "Clark launched and built several of Discovery’s largest and most successful networks and he is the ideal creative executive to fully unlock the potential of these high quality brands."
"These are strong and growing brands that appeal to a passionate and loyal audience," said Bunting. "I am looking forward to building the brands across all platforms and expanding the programming slates of all three properties to tap into an even larger viewership."
Tomko, who assumes the reins for Discovery Studios from Bunting, will retain her general manager duties with Discovery Health Channel (which will become the Oprah Winfrey Network in 2009), FitTV and Discovery Kids. Discovery Studios, poised to create more than 200 hours of original content in 2008, encompasses the production arm for Discovery Communications, responsible for original programming production for all of Discovery’s domestic channels. Discovery Studios recently debuted the critically acclaimed Man on Wire at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
Added Zaslav, "Carole’s innovation and enthusiasm launched FitTV and led Discovery Health Channel through a critical transitional year of growth and change. She has the talent and energy to take on more bandwidth and her business acumen and programming creativity are perfectly matched for this new dual role."
