If you tune into Discovery Channel — from Deadliest Catch to Gold Rush — you’re often left thinking, “I could never do that.” Well, tonight’s premiere will have you, if you’re like me, thinking the same. Alaska: The Last Frontier follows the Kilcher Family who fled Switzerland during WWII and settled eventually in the woods of Southern Alaska.

Three generations of the Kilcher family still live there today on a homestead consisting of over 640 acres. Yule Kilcher and his wife Ruth taught their family (six girls and two boys) to be self-sufficient and live off the land.  Yule’s sons, Atz and Otto, continue this way of life  with their sons, Atz Lee, Atz’s son, and Eivin, Otto’s son, and their families. Get to know the Kilchers through the video below and tune in tonight at 9pm ET/PT to Discovery Channel and contemplate if you could make it in the Alaskan frontier.

And, if the name “Kilcher” or the title song sound familiar, there’s a reason. Grammy nominated singer and songwriter Jewel is Atz’s daughter and performs the theme with her dad, who also authored the song.
