On Monday night, Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav and other leaders across the industry, along with Founder and Chairman John Hendricks and members of the company’s Board of Directors gathered at Broadcasting & Cable’s 23rd annual Hall of Fame dinner to honor Bill Goodwyn, President & CEO, Strategic Distribution & Discovery Education, as he was inducted into the prestigious Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame. The award recognizes leading pioneers, innovators and stars of the broadcasting and cable industries.

Held at New York’s famed Waldorf-Astoria hotel, the event was hosted by 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl and NBC News’ Meredith Vieira. Goodwyn was honored in the company of fellow distinguished industry professionals such as Richard Plepler, CEO, HBO, Gary Newman, Chairman and CEO, Twentieth Century Fox Television and legendary Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek.

Addressing a sold-out crowd, Goodwyn thanked his family and mentors, who have been instrumental in his career. A graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism and Communications, Goodwyn began his career working in sales for Xerox. It wasn’t long until he was scooped up by a recruiter for Scripps Howard, and, as Goodwyn put it, he “immediately knew that he had found a home in the cable industry.”

Since joining Discovery in 1987, Goodwyn has overseen record-breaking global distribution growth for the company. Goodwyn and his team have brought Discovery’s distribution to 1.8 billion cumulative subscribers, reaching 416 million TV households worldwide. In addition to his numerous successes at the helm of Discovery’s distribution division, Bill has helped grow Discovery Education into a powerful educational asset, creating myriad digital resources for K-12 classrooms, aiding teachers in forming better strategies for engaging students, and introducing Discovery Education’s digital Techbooks. More than 650,000 students across 42 states and provinces now have access to Discovery Education’s Techbook series.

Through his 26 years with Discovery Communications, Bill Goodwyn’s contributions cannot be overstated and, on behalf of the company, we are pleased to congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.
