Animal Planet, Science Channel Rock SXSW Interactive

Howdy! We’re back in Silver Spring, with lots of stories to share from our past few days at SXSW Interactive, the annual gathering of digital innovators in Austin.

In the land of BBQ and boots, Discovery shared its passion for cats and science with curious fans through panels, parties and Meetups.

On Saturday, Grace Suriel, Social Media Director at Animal Planet, appeared on the feline themed panel, ” Cat Cash: The Economy of Cats” to discuss the network’s role in the global phenomenon that is internet cat videos. Grace was joined by Scott Stulen, of the Cat Vid Fest, ofwhich Animal Planet is the exclusive sponsor, Will Braden, creator of Henri Le Chat Noir, and Ben Lashes, manager of famous feline’s Nyan Cat, Keyboard Cat and Grumpy Cat, who made a surprise appearance at the panel and sent social media into a frenzy. The panel was also covered by The GuardianOnlineVideo.net and The Star Online.

On Saturday night, the Science Channel brought explosive fun for the coolest geeks in Austin. Science hosted a star-studded live show, I F*cking Love Science. At the show, Science Channel announced late night star Craig Ferguson would executive produce the new I F*cking Love Science  television series, igniting buzz across the social sphere.

Later, Elise Andrew of I F*cking Love Science joined fellow science fans Bill Nye “The Science Guy,” Outrageous Acts of Science host Hakeem Oluseyi and comedian Eugene Mirman for explosive science fun, with countdowns of favorite moments in science and epic science experiments onstage.

Then, on Sunday, Animal Planet invited the coolest cats at SXSW to its “me-wowzing” Cats Live Here party. With help from Discovery’s global events team, the network created a haven for cat lovers complete with human-sized yarn balls and a #MEOW cat scratcher, larger-than-life cut-outs of famous cats (including one that had a very interesting night at multiple SXSW parties) and an appearance by feline sensation, Lil BUB. Kitty enthusiasts packed the party and the surrounding blocks for their chance to pop on some cat ears and sing along with Austin’s premiere 80’s cover band, the Spazmatics.  Also stopping by was internet celebrity iJustine, who couldn’t resist meeting Lil BUB.

Relive the weekend fun with us in the images below, and let the countdown for SXSW 2015 begin!
