Local High School Girls ‘Say Yes to the Prom’ at Discovery Event

SYTTPYesterday, at One Discovery Place, we all saw a little magic happen at the third annual “Say Yes to the Dress,” a corporate initiative promoting confidence and a positive self-image for deserving high school girls

In the morning, forty local high school girls arrived and were paired with Discovery employees to lead them through a day of mentoring, prom dress shopping and makeovers. Monte Durham, fashion director and star of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, welcomed the girls to the event, sharing his own prom experiences and preparing them for the excitement to come.

Girls then embarked on a beauty whirlwind, choosing the perfect dress and accessories from more than 1,200 dresses donated by Discovery employees and industry partners, and then receiving complementary head-to-toe makeovers from bareMinerals and JCPenney.

Beautiful inside and out, the girls debuted their prom looks on the red carpet, MC’d by Durham, in front of hundreds of applauding Discovery employees.

As they left Discovery, the girls received a swag bag of goodies and a special letter from Michelle Obama, one of the country’s most outspoken champions for the empowerment of young women.

The Silver Spring, “Say Yes to the Prom” event marks the first of three as part of the program’s national expansion.  This year, Discovery will continue to celebrate prom season with two additional events bringing “Say Yes to the Prom” to Des Moines in partnership with Mediacom on April 23 and to Chicago in partnership with Comcast, OWN and Harpo Studios on May 7.
