Discovery and Mediacom Bring ‘Say Yes to the Prom’ to Des Moines

Yesterday, Discovery worked alongside affiliate partner Mediacom to bring its “Say Yes to the Prom” initiative to a deserving group of high school girls in Des Moines, Iowa. The event, the second of three to occur this year as part of the program’s national expansion, brought 30 girls from Roosevelt High School to La’ James International College for a full day of mentoring, prom dress shopping and makeovers. The event brought the magic of the annual Silver Spring initiative to Des Moines, allowing even more girls to build relationships with industry professionals, boost their self-confidence and, of course, say “yes” to the prom dress.

Monte Durham, star of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, hosted the event, ensuring that his personal touch was given to each girl’s prom ensemble. Mediacom employees were also paired with the girls, serving as mentors and personal shoppers throughout the day, while La’ James International College style experts worked on hair, nails, and makeup to complement their new looks.

As in Silver Spring, the Iowa event concluded with a red carpet reveal hosted by Monte, as each of the girls walked the runway in their new, personalized prom day looks. Superintendent Thomas Ahart of Des Moines Public Schools joined the final event to read a special letter for the girls written by First Lady Michelle Obama. Discovery’s own Chief of Human Resources and Global Diversity Officer, Adria Alpert Romm and Mediacom’s EVP of Programming and Human Resources, Italia Commisso Weinand, also took the stage to congratulate the girls on an incredible day.

Discovery will round out the prom season with a final “Say Yes to the Prom” event to be held in partnership with Comcast, OWN and Harpo Studios at Harpo Studios in Chicago on May 7th.

We’ve shared a few magical moments from the day below, and for more, take a look at our Facebook album!
