As we all prepare for the holiday weekend ahead, Destination America, the only network to celebrate the people, places, and stories of the U.S, is preparing to bring patriotic celebrations to seven deserving communities across America through their Red, White and You initiative.
Earlier this year, Destination America partnered with national weekly magazine USA Weekend for the second-annual Red, White and You contest, to award two deserving communities, and several runner-ups, a one-of-a-kind Fourth of July celebration. The contest, which garnered more than 2,500 entries, asked folks across the country to put their patriotism on display to prove why their respective towns were most deserving of an over-the-top Independence Day party.
With much deliberation, Destination America awarded top prizes to Prescott, Ariz. and Hamtramck, Michigan, and runner-up prizes to Columbus, Ga.; Charleston, W.V.; Aiken, S.C.; Ellwood City, Pa; and Toledo, Ohio. Additionally, an online poll for a People’s Choice winner, which took place at DestinationAmerica.com, resulted in three winners, with Delmont, S.D.; Gloucester, Mass.; and Hackleburg, Ala., coming out on top, each receiving $4,000 toward their local Parks and Recreation Department.
The winners are in for a patriotic treat. In Prescott, a town devastated by wildfires that tragically claimed the lives of 19 brave firefighters, the 4th of July celebration will feature a festive lineup of activities, including rides, carnival games, fireworks, and a special performance from the Grammy-winning rock band, The Wallflowers. In Hamtramck, a true melting pot community of America that has persevered in a difficult economy, Destination America will bring the first July 4th celebration in 30 years with pony rides, a petting zoo and carnival games followed by a live performance from local Motown band JR Walkers Allstar. Destination America also partnered with the Student Conservation Association to provide a complete facelift to Hamtramck’s Veterans Park as well as with HATCH: A Hamtramck Art Collective to bring in local artists to create commemorative art pieces that will be donated to the town. Comcast has also partnered with Destination America and will be on site to provide local families with information about the company’s Internet Essentials program, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program.
Both cities will additionally have the opportunity to meet Abel Gonzales, host of Destination America’s hit TV show, Deep Fried Masters. Abel will be sharing his coveted fry secrets and offer free samples of inventive fried foods, from deep-fried garlic butter to fried elephant ears, a popular cinnamon-sugar pastry.
Red, White and You’s first official sponsors are Ball Park(r) Brand and Nexium24HR – all attendees will be treated to the American tradition, Ball Park Beef Franks with all the toppings.
The runner-up towns will also enjoy festive celebrations, with live performances, games, fireworks and much more.
If you’ll be attending any of our celebrations, we hope you’ll share your experiences with us with the hashtag #RedWhiteYou, and the Discovery family wishes you all a safe and happy holiday weekend!
