Discovery Communications and National Military Family Association Celebrate Veterans Day Together

Serving your country is not only incredibly honorable, but also an incredibly difficult adjustment for service members – and it’s hard on the families of those who serve, too. That’s where the National Military Family Association (NMFA) comes in: they’re a non-profit organization that works to strengthen and protect military families. Founded in 1959, they work to meet the needs of military families through a variety of services – from scholarships and summer camps for children who have a deployed parent (or parents), to retreats for families to connect after dealing with a war-related injury or a long separation. This Veterans Day, Discovery Communications, home to American Heroes Channel, has partnered with the NMFA for three separate events to celebrate and support military families.

To kick off the national holiday, Discovery and NMFA will have a float in New York City’s annual “America’s Parade,” which draws an estimated 600,000 spectators to the busy streets and is broadcast nationwide. The float will host this year’s “My Hero Is” contest winner Corey McCrea from Memphis, NY, who nominated his father as his military hero.

After the parade, NMFA and Discovery will host a fundraiser reception and comedy show to raise money for military families. The reception will be hosted in Bryant Park and feature active duty Marine Captains and musical guests John Ed Auer and Matt Smith, while the comedy show, at Gotham Comedy Club, will host Dave Attell, Jim Gaffigan and Jamie Kaler. Both active duty and veteran service members can attend the events at a discounted rate.

You can follow the conversation online tomorrow by following Discovery Communications (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram), American Heroes Channel (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) and NMFA (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) as well as the hashtags #VeteransDay, #AmericasParade and #MilFams.

This Veterans Day, be sure to take a moment to thank those service members who have risked their lives and for the postive impact they’ve had on the lives we live every day…and their families!
