Discovery Hosts Cereal Drive for Citizens of Flint, Michigan

Did you know that iron-rich foods can help combat the harmful effects of lead poisoning? Some cereals, for example, help absorb lead and even reverse some its dangerous side effects.

Knowing that a little cereal can go a long way, the Discovery Communications family came together last Thursday for a cereal drive to help the citizens of Flint, Michigan – ultimately collecting more than 600 boxes for Feeding America’s Food Bank of Eastern Michigan! Discovery is dedicated to giving back to communities around the world through the Discovery Impact programs. Along with knowing their contributions will ultimately help someone in Flint, employees who donated a box of cereal also received a special ‘thank you’ St. Patrick’s Day donut.

The Flint Water Crisis began nearly a year ago, when the water supply in the city was switched from the Detroit Water and Sewage Department to the Flint River, which unknowingly had a host of problems that culminated in lead contamination, which has further led to thousands of residents (including somewhere between 6,000 and 12,000 children) being exposed lead-contaminated drinking water. Countless feuds have ensued, while the solution remains unclear.

We are hopeful a resolution is reached soon and are proud of the Discovery employees from across the U.S. who came together to help Flint.
