This week we say a reluctant goodbye our spring INterns. Approximately 80 students were part of the program this semester, working out of five of our U.S. offices: Silver Spring, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami. The INterns are always bright lights around here; there’s something uniquely special about their optimism, fresh perspectives and willingness to tackle anything head-on!
We asked Erika Friend, an INtern on the corporate communications team, to write about her experience this past semester. Here’s what she had to say:
I have wanted to work at Discovery Communications since changing my major to Public Relations and Strategic Communication my sophomore year at American University. Working at one of the largest media companies in the world seemed so exciting to me as an aspiring communications and marketing professional. When I received the opportunity to serve as the corporate communications intern to the social and digital Discovery team my final semester of college, I could not have been more ecstatic for this once in a lifetime opportunity!
There are so many wonderful opportunities for interns, such as weekly speakers, networking events and attending company-wide events like the Puppy Bowl. It’s very easy for interns to get integrated into the Discovery family and that’s something I’ve really enjoyed about my internship experience. In my three months here, I have met so many interesting and ambitious people and have built relationships that I am certain will be life-long. The passionate atmosphere at Discovery is so contagious and I’ve loved every moment of my time as an intern!
A piece of advice for future interns: Be sure to take a step out of your comfort zone! By doing this, you will set yourself up to meet so many different people, open more doors within the company, and learn even more about the stimulating and ever-changing media industry.
My time here has exceeded my expectations and has validated my interest in continuing in the media industry in my career! Thank you Discovery Communications, for this eye-opening experience.
A big THANKS to the INterns for all of their hard work over these past few months!
